Job Description

Primary Purpose:

Assist in the development and implementation of a comprehensive program of health services for the school. Responsible for providing direct health services to students. Promote health education and preventive health practices for students. Serve as health advocate for students.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:
Registered Nurse, with current Texas licensure.
Current certification in CPR
Certification in audiometric, vision, acanthosis, and spinal screening
Candidate must have satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting check

Special Knowledge/Skills:
Effective organization, communication, and interpersonal skills
Knowledge of nursing techniques/procedures, assessing illness/injury, ethical principles/codes of professional nursing practices, health education, wellness promotion and inventory control
Maintain confidentiality
 
Experience:
Minimum 1 year of nursing practice

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

  1. Practices within the defined limits of the Texas Nurse Practice Act and the American Nurses' Association standards of nursing practice.
  2. Complies with the Texas Department of State Health Services regulations and with District policy.
  3. Performs screening procedures as required by the Texas Department of State Health Services, Texas Education Agency, and District Policy. Makes referrals as necessary.
  4. Serves as health advocate for students.
  5. Provides temporary and emergency care for sick and injured students or staff members.
  6. Notifies parents of accident or illness and secures medical care for students in emergency cases if parents or emergency contact cannot be reached.
  7. Provides emergency care according to District policy and procedures.
  8. Serves as Health Liaison between school, physician, parents, and community.
  9. Assess student problems and makes appropriate referrals, working with students, teachers, parents, family physicians and other community health providers as needed.
  10. Coordinates a system of administration and management of medications given at school.
  11. Administers medications according to District policy and procedures.
  12. Reviews and evaluates immunization records.
  13. Maintains complete and accurate health records on each student.
  14. Maintains accurate and complete clinic records.
  15. Submits timely reports as requested by the Director of Health Services.
  16. Maintains adequate supplies in the health clinic.
  17. Reports potential health/safety hazards to the campus principal.
  18. Participates in the Admission, Review, and Dismissal Committee, Crisis Team, child abuse situations, and school committees as required.
  19. Promotes wellness and provides information to facilitate healthy life styles among students and faculty.
  20. Provides health counseling and teaching on an individual basis.
  21. Contributes to the health education program as a resource person in both planning and teaching capacities, working with the principal and teachers.
  22. Maintains timely communication with the campus principal and the Director of Health Services regarding health-related matters.
  23. Maintains certification in CPR, Vision, Hearing, Acanthosis, and Spinal Screening.
  24. Participates in staff meetings and professional growth activities.
  25. Completes mandated Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) requirements to maintain licensure.
  26. The nurses shall keep well informed of the latest trends in health by attending meetings that contribute to professional growth.
  27. Daily attendance and punctuality are essential functions of the job.
  28. Perform other duties as assigned.

Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including personal computer and peripherals
Posture: Prolonged sitting, standing, walking, bending, stooping, climbing, reaching, and pulling
Motion: Repetitive hand motions, frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching
Lifting: Occasional light lifting and carrying (up to 40+ lbs.)
Environment: Occasional district-wide travel
Mental Demands: Ability to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and
other staff; biological exposure to bacteria and communicable diseases
