Job Description
Primary Purpose:
Plan and provide direct therapy to students with mental, physical or emotional disabilities. Assess students and plan therapeutic intervention to maximize physical or mental functioning, increase independent functioning, and/or adjust to disabilities.
Qualifications:
Education/Training:Bachelor's degree in occupational therapy or related program.
Valid Occupational Therapist License by the State Board of Examiner of Occupational Therapy
Candidate must have a satisfactory outcome of the fingerprinting check/background check
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Ability to maintain auditable student records.
Knowledge of rehabilitation procedure, activities, and equipment used in occupational therapy.
Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior.
Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with students, peers,
parents and community.
Experience:
Experience as an Occupational Therapist in public schools (preferred)
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
- Plan and provide direct and consultative services consistent with occupational therapy goals contained in students' Individual Education Plan (IEP).
- Evaluate students’ program and determine readiness for termination of occupational therapy services.
- Design, construct, and alter equipment. Provide students with adaptive equipment and devices to promote maximum independence.
- Assess students with disabilities and determine eligibility for services.
- Participate in the Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee to assist with interpretation of assessment data, appropriate placement, and goal setting for students according to district procedures.
- Consult with educational staff and parents regarding occupational therapy.
- Provide staff development training in assigned schools to assist school personnel with selection and use of adaptive equipment and understanding of occupational therapy program.
- Consult with parents, teachers, administrators, and other relevant people to enhance their work with students.
- Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the maturity level, interests, and needs of the student.
- Establish control and administer discipline according to the Student Code of Conduct and Student Handbook.
- Develop and coordinate a continuing evaluation of the occupational therapy program and implement changes based on the findings.
- Assist in the selection of equipment and adaptive materials.
- Develop and maintain effective individual and group relationships with students and parents.
- Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other required documents.
- Comply with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and local board policies.
- Comply with all district and assigned campus routines and regulations.
- Effectively communicate with colleagues, students, and parents.
- Participate in professional development activities to improve skills related to job assignments.
- Daily attendance and punctuality are essential functions of the job.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including personal computer and peripheralsPosture: Frequent standing, stooping, bending, reaching, pulling, pushing
Motion: Repetitive hand motions, frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching
Lifting: Occasional light lifting and carrying (40+ lbs.); may be required to lift and transfer
students to and from wheelchair or assist with positioning students with physical disabilities.
Environment: May work prolonged or irregular hours; daily district-wide travel.
Mental Demands: Ability to interpret policies and procedures; communicate effectively (verbal and written);
maintain emotional control under stress. This position requires the individual to meet multiple demands
from several people and interact with the public and other staff.
