Reports To: Manager of Education Services

Location: hitac̓u, BC (Ucluelet)

Employment Type: Full-Time, Term (Summer)

Salary Band: Band 4 



POSITION PURPOSE

The Summer Program Lead designs and delivers the daily program for a small group of approximately 6–7 children (ages 7 and up) in the summer day program. Working under the direction of the Manager of Education Services, the Lead is responsible for planning age-appropriate activities, outings, and learning experiences for their group from start to finish, ensuring the safety and wellbeing of the children, and weaving Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ culture, language, and land-based learning into the group's daily experience. This is a seasonal student position with no supervisory authority over other staff or volunteers.


ACCOUNTABILITY

Program Design & Planning

  • Design and plan the daily program for the assigned group, including activities, outings, recreation, crafts, and land-based learning experiences appropriate for children ages 7 and up.
  • Develop weekly and daily schedules that balance structure, play, rest, and cultural learning.
  • Select and prepare materials, supplies, and equipment needed for planned activities.
  • Incorporate Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ language, teachings, land-based learning, and community values into the program design.
  • Adapt plans in response to weather, participant needs, group dynamics, and emerging opportunities.
  • Review plans with the Manager of Education Services to ensure alignment with program goals and safety standards.


Program Delivery & Group Leadership

  • Lead the assigned group of approximately 6–7 children through the daily program in a safe, inclusive, and engaging manner.
  • Facilitate activities, transitions, outings, and recreation with confidence and energy.
  • Ensure the safety and supervision of the children at all times — indoors, outdoors, and off-site.
  • Provide respectful, trauma-informed behaviour guidance and redirection.
  • Support positive group dynamics and an inclusive, culturally safe environment.
  • Maintain accurate attendance records, incident documentation, and activity tracking for the group.


Teamwork & Collaboration

  • Work collaboratively with other Program Leads, program staff, Elders, knowledge keepers, and community members.
  • Participate in team meetings, debriefs, and joint program planning discussions.
  • Coordinate shared resources, spaces, and combined activities across groups as needed.
  • Model positive teamwork, professionalism, and respectful communication.


Professional Conduct & Cultural Respect

  • Represent the YG in a respectful and professional manner at all times.
  • Maintain confidentiality and follow workplace expectations.
  • Follow health and safety practices and ensure safe use of program spaces, supplies, and equipment.
  • Show respect for Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ culture, language, and traditions across all activities.
  • Use tools, equipment, and vehicles safely and responsibly.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Manager of Education Services.


EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

Required:

  • At least 1 year of experience working with children or youth in a group setting
  • Ability to plan and lead engaging, developmentally appropriate activities for children and youth
  • Valid First Aid/CPR-C certification, or willingness to obtain prior to employment
  • Clear Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening
  • Valid Class 5 Driver's Licence

Preferred:

  • Responsible Adult Certification
  • Early Childhood Educator Assistant (ECEA), Early Childhood Educator (ECE), or Child and Youth Care education
  • Leadership or supervisory experience working with children or youth
  • Class 4 Driver's Licence

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Work takes place in indoor, outdoor, community, and land-based settings
  • Tasks may include active recreation, outdoor activities, walking, lifting supplies, and extended periods of standing or supervising participants
  • Work may include local outings, cultural activities, and travel
  • Some flexibility may be required for early mornings, late pick-ups, evening activities, or weekend events
