Job Description

Classification: Band 2 — Support 

Reports To: Public Works Operations Supervisor 

Location: Hitacu, BC 

Employment Type: Casual / Oncall/ Seasonal

 

POSITION PURPOSE 

The Trail Maintenance Worker assists in ensuring the ʔapsčiik t̓ašii multi-use pathway is properly maintained and safe for public use. This position supports stewardship, maintenance, and monitoring of the trail system within Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ territory, working with other staff to carry out routine maintenance, safety inspections, and environmental care of the pathway. 


ACCOUNTABILITY 

Trail Maintenance 

  • Perform routine maintenance and upkeep of the ʔapsčiik t̓ašii multi-use pathway, including clearing debris, vegetation management, and minor surface repairs. 
  • Inspect trail conditions regularly and identify hazards such as fallen trees, erosion, drainage issues, and surface deterioration. 
  • Perform seasonal maintenance activities, including preparation for trail opening and off-season work. 
  • Maintain trail infrastructure such as signage, barriers, and safety markers to ensure safe public use. 
  • Follow established maintenance procedures and guidelines developed in coordination with Parks Canada. 
  • Ensure tools, equipment, and materials are used safely and maintained in good working order. 
  • Identifyanticipate, and request required supplies and equipment to support ongoing trail maintenance operations. 

Safety & Communication 

  • Monitor trail conditions and promptly report safety concerns, hazards, or deficiencies to supervisors and/or Parks Canada. 
  • Follow all safe work procedures in compliance with Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ safety standards and applicable regulations. 
  • Support public safety by ensuring trail access points and travel surfaces remain safe and accessible. 
  • Respond appropriately to incidents or emergencies and report them according to established procedures. 

Team Support 

  • Assist other Assets staff and provide essential back-up of duties as required and as trained to do so. 
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as necessary in the performance of the position, and as assigned by the Director of Capital Infrastructure and Asset Management. 


EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE 

Required: 

  • Grade 10 education 
  • WHMIS certification 
  • Emergency Response certification 
  • Current Class 5 BC Driver's Licence 
  • Satisfactory criminal records check 

Preferred: 

  • Grade 12 education 


CORE COMPETENCIES 

  • Basic skills in grounds maintenance and use of hand tools and light equipment 
  • Knowledge of and ability to follow safe work procedures including hazardous materials 
  • Ability to identify hazards and take appropriate action 
  • Ability to operate and use a variety of tools and equipment; aptitude to learn and use new equipment and tools as needed 
  • Basic record-keeping and organizational skills 
  • Able to work independently as well as within a collaborative team framework 

WORKING CONDITIONS 

  • Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions 
  • Physically demanding tasks including walking long distances, lifting, bending, and carrying equipment 
  • Work takes place on uneven and remote terrain 
  • Must follow safe work and check-in procedures 
  • Flexibility to work varying hours as required
