Job Description

MIDDLE SCHOOL ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL

FLSA STATUS: Exempt
WORK CALENDAR: 210 Days 
REPORTS TO: Building Principal
SUPERVISES AND EVALUATES: Certified and Classified Staff 


POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop rules and guidelines that establish proper behavioral expectations for students. Enforce school rules, guidelines,  and policies.
  • Maintain accurate discipline records including after school detention, in school suspension, out of school  suspension, and expulsion materials.
  • Provide teachers with update on student disciplinary  action,  in accordance with confidentiality laws.
  • Act as liaison between local law enforcement agencies and school. Work closely with Johnson County Juvenile Probation,  Community  Corrections, and Alternative to Out of School Suspension.
  • Develop, maintain,  and enforce school-wide attendance policy.
  • Communicate chronic attendance issues to Johnson County Juvenile Probation Department. Establish and monitor a safe, structured building environment for all students and staff.
  • Develop and Oversee supervision  schedule.
  • Participate in a variety of supervision activities including: hallway, bus, cafeteria, arrival, dismissal, and  extra-curricular activities.
  • Serve as Emergency  Preparedness Coordinator.
  • Develop and maintain building security procedures. Including schedules, evacuation procedures, severe weather procedures, and lock-down procedures. Maintain current maps identifying classrooms, hydrant locations, emergency shut-offs. Communicate proper procedures to students, staff, visitors,  and local emergency personnel.
  • Address school helpline inquiries.
  • Evaluate certified and classified staff as assigned by the building principal. Properly maintain evaluation records.
  • Develop, maintain, and revise student handbook. Develop, maintain, and revise teacher  handbook.
  • Develop,  maintain,  and revise substitute teacher handbook.
  • Assist with the coordination of all testing procedures including nine-week assessments and state assessments.
  • Serve as instructional data point person. Work closely with Secondary curriculum director and technology personnel to coordinate  proper testing procedures.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of the ILEARN Remediation program. Serve as an administrative representative in all special education case conferences. Serve as Section 504 Compliance officer. Conduct all Section 504 conferences.
  • Assist in the development and revision of the school's improvement plan and model. Participate in all facets of implementation of the school improvement plan.
  • Participate and contribute in staff meetings, department chair meetings, building administrative meetings, school improvement meetings, etc.
  • Work closely with the Transportation Department to develop, maintain, revise, and enforce transportation policies.
  • Develop and maintain the school based awards and incentive programs. Develop and maintain an effective in school suspension program. Assist the building principal in hiring of certified and classified staff. Assist the building principal in planning of the new middle school.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by the administration.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must have an Indiana principal's license
  • Master's degree or higher from an accredited college or university
  • Successful classroom teaching experience
  • Successful administrative background
  • Knowledge of and experience in curriculum development
  • Knowledge of research based PLC models
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Develop positive relationships with others
  • Ability to supervise, evaluate, and develop effective employees
  • Ability to develop, plan and implement short and long-range goals
  • Knowledge and experience in improving student achievement
  • Conflict resolution and/or mediation skills
