Job Summary: Designs by Sundown is seeking an experienced Fencing Installer. The Fencing Installer is a highly skilled, hands-on fencing professional responsible for leading small crews in the installation, repair, and maintenance of fencing systems while actively performing installation work. This role serves as the primary job-site lead, supporting the Foreman by coordinating daily tasks, ensuring quality craftsmanship, and maintaining safety and productivity standards. Strong expertise in wood fence building is required. This position bridges the gap between the Foreman and the installation crew. 

 

Key Responsibilities: 

Crew Leadership & Daily Coordination 

  • Lead and work alongside a small fencing crew, setting the pace and standard for workmanship. 

  • Assign daily tasks and ensure crews understand scope, layout, and quality expectations. 

  • Serve as the primary point of contact on-site when the Foreman is not present. 

  • Provide hands-on training and guidance to less experienced installers. 

Project Planning & Layout 

  • Measure, layout, and verify fence lines, post spacing, elevations, and gate locations. 

  • Interpret site plans, sketches, and verbal instructions from the Foreman or Project Manager. 

  • Confirm material quantities and notify Foreman of shortages or discrepancies. 

Site Preparation 

  • Ensure job sites are properly prepared, utilities are marked, and obstacles are addressed. 

  • Coordinate efficient site setup to maintain productivity and crew safety. 

Installation & Assembly 

  • Perform and lead installation of wood, vinyl, chain-link, composite, and ornamental metal fencing. 

  • Build custom wood fences including privacy, decorative, horizontal, ranch-style, and specialty designs. 

  • Dig and set posts using manual or power equipment; ensure plumb, square, and accurate alignment. 

  • Install rails, pickets, panels, gates, tension systems, and hardware to specifications. 

  • Ensure all work meets company quality standards and client expectations. 

Quality Control & Safety 

  • Monitor workmanship and correct issues in real time. 

  • Ensure tools, materials, and equipment are used safely and properly. 

  • Enforce job-site safety practices and company policies. 

  • Identify potential installation challenges and communicate them proactively to the Foreman. 

Repair & Maintenance 

  • Troubleshoot and execute fence repairs, replacements, and adjustments. 

  • Match existing fence styles, finishes, and materials when performing repairs. 

  • Assist with staining, sealing, or finishing as required. 

 

Required Skills & Qualifications 

  • 4+ years of hands-on fence installation experience. 

  • Demonstrated strength in wood fence construction and custom builds. 

  • Prior experience leading crews or serving as a senior installer or lead. 

  • Ability to read layouts, blueprints, and site plans. 

  • Proficiency with power tools, augers, and construction equipment. 

  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills. 

  • Ability to lift 75–80 lbs and work outdoors in all conditions. 

  • Valid driver’s license. 

 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Commercial fencing experience. 

  • Experience working in landscape construction environments. 

  • Equipment operation experience (skid steer, mini-excavator). 

  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus.
