Department Business Manager

Join the Information Systems Department as the Department Operations Manager, where you'll serve as an integral member of the leadership team supporting both the Bachelor of Information Systems (BSIS) and Master of Information Systems Management (MISM) programs. This comprehensive role combines financial management, human resources oversight, and operational leadership to ensure the department runs efficiently and effectively. You'll manage complex budgets, oversee faculty and student support services, coordinate events and communications, and provide critical support to the Department Chair. This position offers the opportunity to make a direct impact on academic excellence while working at the intersection of finance, operations, and technology education. This is a full-time, exempt, in-person position with typical 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. hours and occasional after-hours events.

What you’ll do in this position:

  • Control and manage department financial activities; analyze expenditures, identify trends, and recommend solutions
  • Review and approve faculty travel expenses, purchasing card expenses, and campus card expenses while ensuring compliance with university guidelines
  • Manage department accounts including endowments, gifts, and club accounts; perform internal audits to identify compliance risks
  • Train faculty, staff, and students on financial policies and serve on the BYU Marriott Financial Council
  • Oversee recruitment, hiring, training, and performance management of 3-5 student employees each semester
  • Coordinate faculty candidate interviews, new faculty onboarding, and faculty departure procedures
  • Prepare and review faculty Rank & Status packets, Annual Stewardship Interview documentation, and faculty advancement materials
  • Oversee class scheduling for each semester, coordinating with college schedulers to resolve conflicts
  • Coordinate annual IS Core Orientation, department events, MISM graduation social, and retirement celebrations
  • Manage department communications including social media presence across Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter
  • Provide comprehensive support to Department Chair including monthly financial reports, meeting facilitation, and scheduling

What qualifies you for this role:

Required

  • Firm commitment to the mission of BYU
  • Independent authority for purchases, vendor selection, student hiring, event operations, classroom scheduling, and project priorities
  • Approval authority for capital purchases and budget funding distribution (in consultation with Department Chair)
  • Direct supervision of 3-5 student employees with oversight of office operations and experiential learning
  • Serve as department Records Liaison and liaison to college controller, financial services, and auditors
  • Bachelor's degree and two years of professional office experience, or equivalent combination
  • Excellent interpersonal and decision-making skills with ability to manage confidential information appropriately
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite with exceptional attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Positive, resilient temperament with strong coordination skills across departments and ability to maintain helpful, courteous manner under pressure

Preferred

  • Bachelor's degree and two years of professional office experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience in higher education administration or academic department management
  • Knowledge of BYU systems including Workday and financial platforms
  • Understanding of university hiring practices and associated policies
  • Experience with faculty processes including rank and status reviews
  • Background in academic department operations or higher education finance
  • Event planning and vendor management experience
  • Social media management and communications experience
  • Familiarity with experiential learning frameworks in higher education

Pay Grade: 51

Typical Starting Pay: $59,000.00 to $75,500.00 annually
