About Lihir
Our Lihir Operation, located on the beautiful island of Niolam, approximately 800km north of Papua New Guinea's capital, Port Moresby, is one of the world’s largest gold mines. Set within a geothermically active, extinct volcanic crater, Lihir operates an open-pit mine producing refractory ore, which undergoes pressure oxidation and conventional leaching to recover gold. Our workforce includes both residential and commute rosters, creating a diverse and dynamic team. Lihir offers a range of recreational facilities, including a gym, sports club, restaurant, bar, swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, and a 9-hole golf course. Purpose
To act as a Heavy Equipment Fitter tradesman to perform both preventative maintenance and unscheduled repairs on Shovel and Drill product lines in order to achieve maximum equipment availability and reliability.
To actively support the shift supervisors and relieve shift supervision duties as required.
To achieve consistently high standards of safety, availability and reliability that meet the Maintenance Section’s needs through:
- Ensuring your compliance with Newmont Safety System
- Ensuring your compliance with Newmont Environment Management System.
- Developing and promoting a culture of continuous improvement in maintenance strategies, systems and practices that will result in the optimisation of results.
Essential Duties
Technical accountabilities
- Maintaining equipment availability and reliability in an environment of often conflicting maintenance and operational requirements.
- Assist in the Training and development of tradesmen NML and Contractors in a technically complex operation.
- Diagnosis of systems and repair.
Scheduling accountabilities
- Ensure Supervisors instructions are carried out with regards to task completion, to minimize delays & ensure schedule completion targets are met.
People’s accountabilities
- Ensure that there is a culture of open communication within all levels of the section and that all employees comply with Newmont policies and procedures.
- Receive counselling and disciplinary actions, if necessary, from your supervisor personal.
- Foster care of company property and cost saving initiatives.
Training & Experience
- Trade Qualifications (NATTB) and/or higher certification in a mechanical engineering discipline
- 3 - 5 years Heavy Equipment experience in a mining maintenance environment including a minimum of two years leadership experience.
- Experience in Heavy Equipment maintenance of Drill & Shovel operation is essential.
- At least 5 years of experience in mining or related industry
- Proven analytical and problem-solving skills together with an aptitude to solve technical difficulties.
- Demonstrated leadership skills and the initiative and drive to effectively supervise a maintenance work group in a technically challenging maintenance environment.
- Customer Services
- Tenacity to ‘Get the Job Done’
- Experience in diagnostics and repairs to O&K and Cat 6060 Shovels or similar & Sandvik Drills along with Epiroc Drills
- Knowledge of creating and maintaining repair procedures with a focus to achieve maximum life of NML components
- Well-developed interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills in English. Understanding of different PNG cultures and customs.
Working Conditions
This role is offered on a 28/14 Fly in, Fly out (FIFO) roster from multiple locations in PNG to Lihir island.
