About the Role
ALS Water operates a modern laboratory in Hume, Canberra equipped with the latest technologies. We strive to exceed client expectations by delivering quality results on time and by maintaining strong relationships. 

A new opportunity has become available to join the team as a Chemist / Analyst to support day-to-day testing and supporting our wider laboratory operations. With a focus on inorganic chemistry, you will conduct laboratory analyses in accordance with ALS quality procedures, operate and maintain laboratory instruments, and ensure samples are analysed within holding times and client turnaround deadlines.

We’ll seeking a hands-on, problem solver that has the confidence to train staff, improve processes and lead projects. The ideal candidate will hold a relevant tertiary qualification in Chemistry, and bring strong numerical skills, sound laboratory technique, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively under pressure. This is a senior technical role, focusing on ICP-OES and ICP-MS, method validation, and continuous improvement.

This is a full-time, permanent opportunity – Monday to Friday

Responsibilities

  • Conduct laboratory analyses, calculations, and sample preparations in accordance with ALS quality procedures

  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory instruments and equipment

  • Ensure samples are analysed and results are reported within holding times and client turnaround deadlines

  • Interpret QC data and report results that meet method requirements and acceptance criteria

  • Identify and escalate anomalous results, samples, or QC issues to your supervisor

  • Maintain accurate, orderly, and auditable records across all workbooks and filing systems

  • Manage consumable stock levels to support efficient test performance

  • Support the training and development of other laboratory staff

  • Perform general housekeeping and any other duties as directed

The essentials

  • Relevant tertiary qualification and/or experience working in an appropriate discipline 

  • Must have experience in commercial or manufacturing laboratory environments

  • Experienced in elemental analysis, utilising ICP-OES / ICP-MS

  • Working knowledge of instrumentation, troubleshoot and fix issues

  • General computer literacy skills.

  • Strong numerical skills.

  • Good laboratory techniques.

  • Maintain accurate data records and prepare analytical reports.

  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with other employees and with clients.

  • Aptitude, experience and understanding of the requirements of a NATA certified laboratory, signatory preferred

  • Ability to work independently or with limited supervision and to make decisions and apply professional knowledge and judgement to solve problems.

  • Plan and prioritise tasks and perform these tasks efficiently 

  • Ability to work under pressure in a team environment.
