Job Description

GENERAL INTRODUCTION:

 

The Archbishop, visible principle of unity in his archdiocese, is called to build up the particular Church unceasingly in the communion of all its members, and to ensure that their diverse gifts and ministries, in union with the universal Church, serve to build up all the faithful and to spread the Gospel. (Apostolorum Successores 8). He must take care that all the affairs which belong to the administration of the whole archdiocese are duly coordinated and are ordered to attain more suitably the good of the portion of the people of God entrusted to him.” (Apostolorum Successores 177). 

 

Each position employed in the Chancery (central administrative offices of the Archdiocese) helps to extend the ministry of the Archbishop in particular ways outlined in the position description.

 

GENERAL SUMMARY OF ESSENTIAL PURPOSE:

The Accountant performs or supports the major accounting processes related to Associated Catholic Cemeteries, including, but not limited to A/R, A/P, Fixed Assets Accounting, Care Fund Accounting, credit card processing, and associated duties related to audit, budgeting, forecasting support, and reconciliations. This is an onsite position, with potential for hybrid work by mutual agreement with the supervisor after a suitable training period and consistently demonstrated satisfactory performance. 

 

ESSENTIAL POSITION DUTIES:

  1. Collaborate with Accounting department and Cemeteries Operations leadership and members in implementing the mission of the department and entity. This is accomplished by participating in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the department's and Operations’ programs and services. It is also accomplished by timely, professional, and clear written and oral communications.
  2. Become proficient in the use of the Plotbox Software system utilized to capture sales, returns, customer transfers, donations, accounting-fund transfers, and compute commissions.
  3. Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Preparing journal entries, reconciliations, and well-researched variance analysis.
  • Calculating Commissions and managing the initial steps to the approval process for timely and accurate payment.
  • Maintaining an organized filing system for all accounting records related to Cemeteries.
  • Generating and distributing specialized financial reports and supporting all internal and external reporting efforts.
  • Preparing assigned audit schedules and financial statement tie-out for the annual audit.
  • Supporting and backing-up other Chancery or Shared Services Functions, as assigned.
  1. Document and maintain up-to-date desk procedures covering all responsibilities. Take the lead in training back-ups and ensuring coverage.
  2. Apply an internal-controls-focused mindset in job performance.

 

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Primary:

  1. Willingness and ability to support the mission of the Church by extending the ministry of the Archbishop.
  2. Ability and desire to use God-given gifts and talents in service of the local Church in support of the collaboration between lay and ordained Ministers.

 

Education:

  1. BS degree in accounting required.

 

Experience:

  1. At least 5-7 years general accounting work experience;
  2. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite;
  3. Knowledge and experience with retail industry accounting preferred, preferred;
  4. Knowledge and experience with query and reporting tools, preferred.

 

Other Elements:

  1. Excellent organizational skills;
  2. Excellent communications skills – clear, professional, and timely. Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in both written and oral English.
  3. Ability to work flexible hours when required; willingness to work overtime in peak season(s) is required.

 

Any offered salary is determined based on internal equity, internal salary ranges, market data, applicant’s skills and prior relevant experience, certain degrees and certifications.
