Project Overview
Beamish Museum is looking to enhance its environmental stewardship by exploring the potential for Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) across its estate. We are seeking two motivated interns to work as a collaborative team to audit the current landscape and provide data-driven insights for future sustainability strategies.
Job Title: Sustainability Research Interns - Nature-Based Solutions at Beamish
Joint Deliverables & Collaboration
While each intern has a specific technical focus, you will work together to produce a final report. This report will combine spatial maps with carbon data to recommend 3–5 high-impact Nature-Based Solutions for the museum to pursue.

The below role descriptor seeks to capture the main requirements of the role consistently, providing a summary of the key duties of the flexible role to help in setting expectations for applicants, flexible workers and line managers. They are not intended to cover all duties which may be required.
Role 1: GIS & Spatial Data Intern
Focus: Mapping, Spatial Analysis, and Data Visualization
Key Responsibilities:
· Collate and digitize existing land-use data and historical maps of the Beamish estate.
· Develop a comprehensive Geographic Information System (GIS) database to host all project findings.
· Produce high-quality cartographic outputs and heatmaps showing high-potential areas for NbS interventions (e.g., reforestation, wetland restoration).
Required Skills:
· Proficiency in ArcGIS Pro or QGIS.
· Understanding of spatial data structures and remote sensing.
· Strong attention to detail in data management.
Diserable skills:
Ability to provide field support to Role 2, eg. having a driving licence.
Role 2: Carbon Accounting & Ecology Intern
Focus: Carbon Baselines
Key Responsibilities:
· Conduct a baseline Carbon Audit of the estate, calculating current carbon storage within soils and biomass.
· Research and apply appropriate carbon emission factors based on UK land-use standards.
· Work alongside the GIS intern to attribute carbon values to specific spatial zones.
· Evaluate the "additionality" of potential nature-based solutions (how much more carbon could be sequestered via specific changes).
Required Skills:
· Ability to conduct field survey at Beamish (training and supervision provided)
· Assist in laboratory work and analysis of collected samples
· Strong competency in Microsoft Excel and data recording
Desirable skills:
· Ability to interpret scientific literature and government carbon reporting frameworks.
