Job Description
- POSITION FUNCTION SUMMARY
Provides leadership and comprehensive support to the Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum, Instruction, and Federal Programs in overseeing all district teaching and learning initiatives. Assists in the strategic planning, development, and implementation of curriculum, instruction, and assessment systems to ensure alignment with state standards and district goals. Leads and supports professional learning, instructional coaching, and continuous improvement efforts across schools. Ensures compliance with state and federal requirements related to instruction and programs, and collaborates with school and district leaders to strengthen instructional practices, improve student outcomes, and promote a cohesive, high-performing learning culture.
- Director of Curriculum and Instruction Essential Functions:
- Oversee the adoption, development, and delivery of curriculum and instructional programs that incorporate NMPED standards, district goals, and support student achievement.
- Participate in the District-level decision-making process to establish and review the District's goals and objectives and major classroom instructional programs.
- Monitor and reevaluate instructional programs on an ongoing basis using input from teachers and principals, applied research, and student data to determine effectiveness and improve outcomes. Recommend changes and adjustments where appropriate.
- Ensure that the necessary time, resources, materials, and technology to support accomplishment of education goals are available.
- Collaborate with curriculum specialists, principals, teachers, and other instructional staff to develop, maintain, and revise curriculum documents based on a systematic review and analysis.
- Engage instructional staff in evaluating and selecting instructional tools and materials to meet student learning needs.
- Provide leadership in staff development programs and ensure that effective activities that support instructional programs, incorporate input from teachers and principals, and are consistent with the District's mission are provided.
- Develop and administer the curriculum and instruction budget based on documented program needs and ensure that operations are cost effective and funds are managed prudently.
- Coordinates and executes the process of recommending adoption of new instructional materials, methods, and programs. Assist with the selection and purchase of supplemental equipment and supplies for the program.
- Evaluate job performance of employees to ensure effectiveness.
- Select, train, evaluate, and supervise staff and make recommendations relative to assignment, retention, discipline, and dismissal.
- Ensure that the District's curriculum and instructional objectives are aligned to the NMPED requirements and the District's strategic plan. Incorporates all changes made at the state level to ensure District compliance.
- Pursue Professional Development activities for self and assigned staff; ensure that Professional Development activities are aligned with District goals and initiatives and current professional research.
- Submits mandated reporting documents to NMPED and other agencies.
- Supervisory Duties and Responsibilities
- Promotes and encourages teamwork, collaboration, innovation, creativity and commitment to continuous improvement through effective leadership skills and practices, to develop a team of engaged employees committed to achieving individual, team , and organizational goals and objectives.
- Manages and supervises the employees in the work unit, providing needed and appropriate support to each direct report in compliance with applicable laws and regulations, and with Carlsbad Municipal Schools policies and procedures, work rules and guidelines.
- Upholds and enforces all Carlsbad Municipal Schools policies, protocols, work rules, and SOPs to ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and applicable standards.
- Leads, directs, and supervises reporting personnel including work procedures, workloads, and work schedules by directing the workflow in such a manner as to promote productive efficiency of employees.
- Collaborates with direct reports to identify their professional development needs; and actively invests time in coaching and developing them and providing other resources to help them to grow and develop skills and knowledge, and to improve performance and productivity.
- Promptly addresses performance, conduct and/or behavior problems collaboratively with direct reports to correct problems; properly documenting corrective action, performance improvement plans, and progressive corrective action/discipline.
Ensures a safe working environment in the assigned area, and ensures compliance with applicable OSHA and other laws, regulations and work rules concerning environmental safety and health of employees.
- Education and Experience Required
- Master's Degree from an accredited college
- Valid New Mexico license to practice in school administration.
Preferred
- 5 years of experience in public school administration and supervision and/or teaching
Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable.
