Position Title: Secondary Social Studies Department Chair
Immediate Supervisor: Principal
Qualifications: Valid West Virginia Teaching Certificate Endorsed in Social Studies
- Employment at Philip Barbour High School Complex for the 2026-2027 school year
- 5 or more successful years teaching in area of certification
- Willingness to support and demonstrate leadership capability by leading peers in school or county initiative
- Demonstrates effectiveness in improving student achievement
- Experience teaching multiple courses and/or grade levels within the department.
- Experience using student data to inform instructional decisions
- Proficiency in knowledge of local, state and federal policy
- Familiarity with state and local testing systems
- Proficient in use of technology systems in Barbour County
- Strong skills in written and verbal communication
Duties & Responsibilities:
1. Instructional Leadership
- Provide instructional leadership aligned with West Virginia College- and Career-Readiness Standards (WVCCRS) and district priorities.
- Support consistent implementation of high-quality instructional practices aligned to West Virginia Department of Education guidance by modeling and coaching.
- Lead departmental efforts to ensure instructional rigor, relevance, and equity.
- Promote culturally responsive instruction and student-centered learning environments.
- Support school improvement initiatives outlined in the school's Strategic Plan.
2. Curriculum Alignment & Instruction
- Coordinate development, review, and refinement of curriculum maps, pacing guides, and instructional resources aligned to WVCCRS.
- Ensure vertical and horizontal alignment within the department.
- Support teachers in aligning daily instruction to standards, depth of knowledge (DOK), and student learning targets.
- Participate in textbook, digital resource, and instructional material review processes in accordance with county procedures.
- Assist administration in ensuring instructional compliance with WV policy and county expectations.
3. Assessment & Data Use
- Support the development and use of common formative and summative assessments aligned to WVCCRS.
- Guide department members in analyzing student achievement data, including state and local assessment results.
- Support teachers in using data to inform instructional adjustments, interventions, and enrichment.
- Assist with preparation for and implementation of state-mandated assessments as applicable.
- Monitor departmental progress toward academic goals identified.
4. Professional Learning & Teacher Support
- Facilitate department meetings focused on instructional improvement, collaboration, and data-informed decision-making.
- Serve as a mentor and instructional resource for department teachers, including new and early-career educators.
- Encourage participation and prepare & deliver professional development aligned to school, county, and WVDE priorities.
- Support implementation of professional learning communities (PLCs) at the departmental level.
- Model continuous professional growth and reflective practice.
5. Collaboration & Communication
- Serve as the primary liaison between the department and school administration.
- Communicate departmental needs, concerns, and accomplishments in a timely and professional manner.
- Collaborate with other department chairs to support interdisciplinary initiatives and school-wide goals.
- Foster a positive, professional departmental culture focused on student success.
- Support county and school initiatives as directed by administration.
6. Scheduling, Resources & Department Operations
- Assist administration with course offerings, staffing considerations, and master schedule input.
- Support equitable access to instructional resources and materials across the department.
- Assist with departmental budget requests, inventory, and resource planning as assigned.
- Support implementation of county-approved programs and instructional initiatives.
- Ensure departmental compliance with county and school procedures.
7. Student Support & Equity
- Promote high academic expectations for all students.
- Support teachers in addressing student academic needs, including interventions, enrichment, and differentiation.
- Assist with course placement recommendations and program alignment to post secondary goals.
- Advocate for equitable instructional opportunities and access within the department.
- Support initiatives related to college, career, and workforce readiness.
8. Professionalism & Ethical Leadership
- Uphold West Virginia Board of Education policies, county regulations, and professional standards.
- Maintain confidentiality and exercise sound professional judgment.
- Serve as a role model for professionalism, collaboration, and instructional leadership.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the principal in accordance with county policy.

Employment Term: June 1, 2026 through June 30, 2027 and position will be terminated on June 30, 2027
Salary: $100.00 for June 2026 payable at the end of June 2026. Then for the 2026/2027 school year paid $600.00 on the last pay period of December 2026 and $600.00 on the last pay period of June 2027
