Job Description

TITLE OF VACANCY: Substitute General Maintenance/Groundsman

 

POSITION TYPE: Service

 

ADMINISTRATIVE UNIT: TheWest Virginia Schools for the Deaf and the Blind (WVSDB)

 

LOCATION: Romney, West Virginia

 

On an on call, as needed basis, performs varied duties that relate to the appearance, repair and general care of school grounds. Additional seasonal assignments will include the operation of lawn care equipment and snow and ice removal vehicles/equipment.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Will adhere to WVBE Policy 5902 – "Employee Code of Conduct" and the applicable WVSDB personnel policies for employee performance. 

  • Observes safety precautions in carrying out assigned duties.
  • Carries and operates communication devices with established notification procedures, as requested.
  • Attends staff meetings as scheduled.
  • Performs preventive maintenance and routine repairs to campus buildings and equipment including vehicles.
  • Should have knowledge, experience and be capable of performing minor repairs to plumbing including flushometers, electrical, welding, and similar responsibilities.
  • Uses and maintains electronic maintenance work order system, employee timekeeping and leave request system, etc.
  • Creates and/or maintain simple records and make reports based on these records.
  • Maintains grounds in a safe and attractive manner by working with lawn care and landscaping equipment as assigned. This includes snow and ice removal from parking lots, campus drive and/or sidewalks as assigned.
  • Conducts inventory of materials, supplies and equipment as requested.
  • Perform grounds and facilities maintenance, work individually, or as a team member for other projects.
  • Assists with snow and ice removal operations on roadways and sidewalks so they can be made safe as soon as possible, this includes callouts after normal working hours, when available.
  • Adheres to WVDE Policy 5902, Employee Code of Conduct.
  • Completes semi-skilled maintenance duties as assigned by supervisor.
  • Appropriately records inventory items used in completion of assigned tasks.
  • Maintains valid WV Driver's License to operate school vehicles.
  • Other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

 

WV Code 18A-4-8:

 "General maintenance" means a person employed as a helper to skilled maintenance employees, and to perform minor repairs to equipment and buildings.

 

"Groundsman" means a person employed to perform duties that relate to the appearance, repair, and general care of school grounds in a county school system. Additional assignments may include the operation of a small heating plant and routine cleaning duties in buildings.

 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

High School diploma or equivalent, pursuant to WV Code §18A-2-5.

  • Meet the definition of "Qualifications" in WV Code §18A-4-8b. demonstrated competency, pursuant to WV Code §18A-4-8e (state-approved competency test), as required. 

  • Criminal background check conducted pursuant to WV Code §18-5-15c and/or §18A-3-10, as appropriate.

    Possess experience and/or training in any/or all job classifications identified within this job description. 

  • Possess a valid state issued motor vehicle operator's license.
  • Physically able to do heavy, extensive lifting and manual labor.
  • Hold, or be able to obtain, licensures required by state or federal agencies in the performance of the position. 

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to reach, stand, walk, lift, grasp, write, talk, hear, see, use technology such as computer and multimedia equipment, and use repetitive motions. The employee may frequently lift and/or move at least 50-100 pounds. He/she shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed drugs while in the workplace. Alcohol and controlled substances which affect employee productivity, safety, or judgement will not be tolerated.

SALARY: 

Hourly rate of pay based on WVSDB Service Personnel Salary Schedule, C Scale. Dependent on applicable years of experience and education level. 

 

EVALUATION

Performance evaluation in accordance with West Virginia Board of Education Policy 5314.
