Job Description

ADVANCED LEARNING SPECIALIST (9-12)

Primary Function

Provides the vision, knowledge, and expertise necessary to develop and sustain advanced learning initiatives, programs and pathways for students in grades 9-12; provides leadership in promoting dual enrollment (DE), the International Baccalaureate (IB) program, and other advanced learning opportunities in the York County School Division.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Administration endorsement required. Enrollment in an administration endorsement program may be considered.
  • A valid Virginia teaching license and a minimum of three years of successful teaching experience
  • Coaching and/or leadership experience
  • Experience in advanced coursework preferred
  • Experience with multidisciplinary curriculum development that reflects current best practices

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Possess working knowledge of best practices in the leadership of specialty academic programs.
  • Possess working knowledge of school division policies and procedures.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Word and Excel.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and facilitate professional development for instructional staff.
  • Ability to analyze data and produce accurate and timely reports.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with division and building-level leadership.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive and productive working relationships with students, staff, parents, and the community.

Performance Responsibilities

  • Leads initiatives and changes to advanced learning courses and programs.
  • Serves as spokesperson and liaison for advanced learning programs and pathways, to include IB, Advanced Placement (AP) and DE.
  • Provides leadership for the implementation of the IB, DE, AP and other advanced coursework curriculum through collaborating and supporting teachers in the planning and teaching.
  • Collaborates with Assessment and Compliance Coordinators to develop testing schedule and administer IB assessments and AP assessments.
  • Leads and participates in professional learning communities and department meetings related to advanced coursework.
  • Delivers high-quality professional development and coaching to support instructional staff.
  • Utilizes data to identify areas of growth and implement strategies to demonstrate improvement in student achievement and enrollment.
  • Observes, evaluates, and gives feedback to teaching IB, DE, and AP staff.
  • Collaborates with division and school-based leadership to ensure proper fiscal management of program budgets and resources in compliance with school board policies.
  • Collaborates with division and school-based leadership to purchase and inventory instructional materials and supplies in accordance with school board policies and standard operating procedures.
  • Collaborates with division staff to plan, develop, and implement strategies and activities to support students' academic performance.
  • Collaborates with building-leadership to arrange course schedules and supervises the selection of students for the advanced learning programs and pathways.
  • Coordinates and implements recruitment activities throughout each academic year in support of advanced learning courses and program enrollment.
  • Arrange, schedule, facilitate and supervise gifted and IB, Honors and DE program events.
  • Coordinates and leads activities for parent and community advisory boards and committees.
  • Arranges and implements staff training for advanced learning programs and pathways as needed.
  • Establishes effective professional working relationships with students, parents, school staff and higher learning faculty.
  • Maintains and reviews student and program records, necessary forms, reports and documents for accuracy.
  • Attends relevant local, state, and regional meetings.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Position Type: Exempt

Reports to: Coordinator of Advanced Learning

Terms of Employment: Ten months and ten days. Salary according to school board pay plan plus supplement.

Evaluation: Performance on this job will be evaluated in accordance with School Board policy and administrative regulations on evaluation of licensed personnel.
