Job Description Position Summary The Assistant Billing Officer role is an entry level position which will provide administrative and clerical support to the billing team within the University Health Services Clinic. This role assists with basic billing tasks, insurance verification, payment processing, and general office duties. The position is ideal for individuals who are beginning a career in medical billing or health administration and are eager to learn in a supportive university clinic environment. Key Responsibilities Billing Support Assist in entering patient charges and billing information into the electronic medical record (EMR) and billing systems. Help prepare and submit routine medical claims under the supervision of the Billing Officer. Review documentation for completeness and flag missing or inconsistent information. Insurance Patient Services Verify student and patient insurance coverage and benefits for scheduled appointments. Provide friendly, helpful customer service by answering basic billing questions via phone, email, or in person. Coordinate with the front desk to ensure accurate documentation of co-pays and payments collected and verify that all payment records are properly reflected in the billing system. Account Administrative Tasks Support follow-up on outstanding claims and insurance inquiries as directed. Help maintain organized billing files, logs, and digital records. Assist with daily reconciliation of payments and basic financial data entry. Perform general administrative duties such as scanning, filing, and responding to routine inquiries. Training Collaboration Participate in training sessions related to medical billing, coding basics, privacy laws, and university procedures. Collaborate with clinical and administrative staff to ensure smooth patient flow and accurate billing information. Seek guidance and feedback from senior billing staff to develop skills and improve accuracy. Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent required. Some coursework or experience in health administration, business, accounting, or medical office operations preferred. Prior experience in a healthcare, billing, or customer service role is helpful but not required. Knowledge, Skills Abilities Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn medical billing processes. Good communication and customer service skills. Ability to maintain confidentiality and follow HIPAA guidelines. Basic computer skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Office applications.
