Description
The Student Union, Inc. is 501(c)(3) nonprofit auxiliary that maintains three major facilities at San José State University in downtown San José, California. These facilities include the Diaz Compean Student Union Building, the Provident Credit Union Event Center (PCUEC), and the Spartan Recreation and Aquatic Center. The Student Union, Inc. functions as part of the Student Affairs Division on campus, and is governed by a Board of Directors made up of a student majority, faculty, and administrators.
The Student Union, Inc. of San Jose State University supports the development, growth, and well-being of students and the campus community by providing diverse programs, desired services, and quality facilities to enhance the collegiate experience.
Under the general supervision of the Marketing & Information Services Manager and the Marketing Supervisor, responsible for the coordination and development of photographic needs in support of the Student Union, Inc., including stock, architectural, portrait, design photography and video production for digital and marketing use.
- Plan, analyze, and execute principal photography and videography for the auxiliaries graphics area, including stock photography, architectural photography, portraiture, design photography, and video content.
- Select appropriate angles, lighting, background, and primary subject matter to enhance desired features to produce the most aesthetically effective and informative photograph.
- Manage the processing and use of images, review technical problems, and check for quality.
- Work directly with external clients, department managers, and SJSU faculty & staff to coordinate availability, staging, and protocol.
- Responsible for ensuring the cosmetic quality of Student Union, Inc. photographic needs.
- Prepare processed photographs for both print and digital use, from large format banners to web thumbnails and social media.
- Maintain and curate Graphics Department photo archive.
- Manage photographic workflow on a daily basis and self-assign tasks when a photographic need is identified.
- Contribute to creative process, from conceptual design phase to end product.
- Capture and produce video content for events, promotional materials, social media, and internal use.
- Operate video equipment including cameras, stabilizers, lighting, and audio equipment to ensure high quality production.
- Edit photo and video footage to create polished final products aligned with the Student Union branding.
- Collaborate with marketing team to storyboard, plan, and execute marketing campaigns for social media from concept to completion.
Qualifications
- Must demonstrate ability to take photographs and/or produce video content with a wide range of implementation: architectural, portraiture, stock, etc.
- Must be able to demonstrate previous works through a portfolio.
- Must be a matriculated SJSU student and continuously enrolled at least half-time* during the academic term.
- *Half-time is defined as follows: Enrollment Status Half-time Units Undergraduate and Post baccalaureate Students 6.0-8.0 hours/semester
- Currently enrolled in the Art Department or Journalism & Mass Communications Department at SJSU as an upper-division photography or photojournalism major.
- Produce high quality digital photo and video content for use in marketing and advertising.
- Ability to coordinate multiple tasks and projects.
- Must be detail-oriented, self-motivate.
- Ability to collaborate with other design team members to achieve weekly and monthly goals.
- Knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, and InDesign software programs.
- Knowledge of video editing software such as Adobe Premier Pro, After Effects, or similar.
- Understanding of lighting for bot photography and videography, including strobe, tungsten, and ambient lighting.
- Understanding of a variety of DSLR and medium format digital camera systems.
- Understanding video composition, framing, lighting, and audio recording techniques.
- Ability to employ customer service skills with photography subjects and with department managers, SJSU faculty, and SJSU staff.
- Ability to work with external clients, such as entertainment industry clients, to coordinate appropriate protocols to photograph during events.
- Must be available nights and weekends for Student Union, Inc. events and SJSU campus events.

- Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person or on the telephone.
- Dexterity of hands, fingers, and wrists to operate a computer keyboard and calculator.

- In general, the position works a schedule based on business needs 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., Monday - Friday, and may require evening and weekend work as needed.
- When school is in session - may work up to, but not in excess of 20 hours per week (among all concurrent positions).
- When classes are not in session (i.e. summer break) may work up to, but not in excess of 40 hours per week.
- This position is non-exempt from the provisions of Section 1 of the California Industrial Welfare Commission Orders.
Employment Information & Policies
This position is employed through the Student Union at San Jose State University which offers employees to receive 40 hours of sick pay during the calendar year.
