Job Description
I. TITLE: College & Career Mentor
II. QUALIFICATIONS:

IV. NATURE AND SCOPE OF THE JOB:
This position provides college and career guidance for low-income and traditionally underrepresented high school students. Funding for this position is provided by the College Access Challenge Grant, managed through the Office of the Idaho State Board of Education. This is a term-limited position that lasts for one academic school year, with the option of a second. This position will be providing services to an area high school. This is an “at will position in that the employer or employee may terminate employment at any time, or for any reason consistent with applicable state or federal law. The “employment period” and other descriptions and terms set forth in this job description shall not create a property right for the employee. These are set forth only to advise the employee of when and what type of services will be required by the district so long as the employment continues.
VIII. EVALUATION
Performance of this position will be evaluated by the building principal.
II. QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelors degree from accredited college or university.
- Knowledge of postsecondary application and financial aid process, Idaho’s local higher education/career resource tools, program development and management, and student academic counseling services.
- Skills in public speaking and presentation techniques; developing surveys and questionnaires; Microsoft computer programs including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; and, problem identification and resolution.
- Ability to work nights and weekends as necessary; assume responsibility, take initiative, and develop new ideas with co-workers; make independent decisions; manage multiple projects; interact with peers, supervisors, students, parents, and other third parties calmly and effectively.
- Work well with students, staff, and the public
- Excellent organizational skills
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Able to work under deadlines
- Maintain confidentiality of staff and students

V. PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Collaborates with high school counseling staff to directly advise and assist low-income and first generation students with career exploration, curricular choices, college application and admission, and financial aid options.
- Coordinates postsecondary publicity and outreach at the high school, making students and families aware of college and career opportunities through presentations, classroom visits, parent-mentor nights, campus field trips, brochures, websites, and other forms of communication.
- Develops and conducts college and career surveys of students in conjunction with high school’s counseling and career staff in order to gauge the increased level of postsecondary awareness and participation.
- Counsels with colleagues, students, and/or parents on a regular basis.
- Strives to maintain and improve professional competence.
- Attends staff meetings and serves on staff committees as requested.
- Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulation.
- Accepts reasonable student supervision assignments that are necessary for the safe management of the school.
- Seeks out opportunities for professional growth.
- Maintains high standards of ethical behavior and confidentiality of student information.
