Key Responsibilities
Leadership and Team Development
Lead and support teams of electrical design, automation, and controls engineers across multiple SPM projects and competency initiatives.
Drive technical capability development through mentoring, coaching, knowledge sharing, and structured skill enhancement programs.
Guide engineers on electrical design methodologies, automation standards, safety concepts, and best engineering practices.
Build a strong competency culture focused on technical excellence, innovation, collaboration, and continuous learning.
Identify competency gaps and define training, certification, and development plans for team growth.
Electrical, Automation & Technical Competency Expertise
Act as the technical authority for electrical and automation engineering practices within the organization.
Define and standardize selection guidelines for electrical and automation components, including:
- Automation control panels
- PLCs, HMIs, servo drives, VFDs, and motors
- Sensors, actuators, and safety devices
- Pneumatic and hydraulic control interfaces
Provide expertise in electrical materials, wiring practices, cable management, grounding, EMC considerations, insulation classes, and enclosure standards.
Drive adoption of emerging technologies including Industry 4.0 concepts, smart automation systems, digital diagnostics, and connected machine solutions.
Support teams in resolving critical technical issues related to electrical and automation systems.
Technical Governance & Design Excellence
Establish and govern electrical and automation design standards, frameworks, and best practices for special-purpose machines.
Define standard electrical architectures, control philosophies, and safety concepts aligned with organizational and customer requirements.
Review and validate:
- Electrical schematics and single-line diagrams
- Panel layouts and cable schedules
- Power distribution and thermal calculations
- Functional safety concepts including PL / SIL compliance
Ensure consistency, quality, and compliance across all electrical and automation deliverables.
Promote seamless integration between electrical hardware, automation software, and machine functionality.
Process Improvement & Standardization
Drive standardization of electrical designs, reusable modules, component libraries, and engineering documentation.
Develop and implement best practices to improve design quality, engineering efficiency, machine reliability, and maintainability.
Analyze recurring technical challenges and recommend process improvements to reduce engineering rework and machine downtime.
Support continuous improvement initiatives related to design validation, quality checks, and engineering workflows.
Encourage innovation and implementation of advanced engineering tools, templates, and automation practices.
Project & Cross-Functional Coordination
Support multiple project teams by providing technical guidance and competency leadership across electrical and automation domains.
Coordinate with manufacturing, procurement, quality, commissioning, software, and customer teams to ensure technical alignment.
Assist project teams in resolving technical risks, design challenges, and customer-specific requirements.
Monitor engineering quality metrics, technical performance, and adherence to standards across projects.
Provide technical updates, competency development status, and improvement initiatives to senior management.
Quality, Compliance & Documentation
Ensure all electrical and automation engineering activities comply with applicable international standards, safety regulations, and customer specifications.
Drive adherence to documentation standards for drawings, calculations, manuals, validation reports, and compliance records.
Establish review and audit mechanisms to maintain consistency and quality in engineering deliverables.
Promote Right First Time (RFT) engineering practices and robust validation processes across teams.
Work Experience
Required Skills and Experience
- 12+ years of experience in electrical and automation design for Special Purpose Machines.
- Proven experience leading and managing electrical and automation teams.
- Strong background in electrical architecture, control systems, safety systems, and component selection.
- Strong understanding of electrical standards and functional safety principles.
- Expertise in Electrical CAD tools (SEE Electrical, EPLAN, AutoCAD Electrical, or equivalent).
- Hands-on experience with PLC platforms (Siemens, Allen-Bradley), HMIs, servo systems, and VFD.
- Good Knowledge in Pneumatic systems and their component selections
- Experience with Industry 4.0, smart automation, and machine connectivity is highly desirable.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with a strategic mindset.
Location Requirement
- Candidates must be based in or willing to relocate to Chennai.
Qualification: BE/B.Tech/M.Tech (Electrical and Electronics Engineering /Electrical and Instrumentation /Electronics and Communication)
