The Director, Fleet (or Fleet Services) is responsible for the strategic leadership, safety, and operational excellence of all fleet vehicles and related assets. This role ensures safe, compliant, efficient, and cost effective fleet operations while maximizing fleet reliability and availability. The Director works closely with senior management, regulatory agencies, vehicle and equipment OEMs, vendors, and internal stakeholders to support uninterrupted fleet management to field operations.

Key Responsibilities:

Fleet Operations Leadership

  • Provide overall leadership and direction for fleet operations, including field operations, hubs, and gateways.
  • Ensure full compliance with DOT and authority regulations and standards.
  • Establish and enforce fleet safety programs, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and emergency response plans.
  • Partner with senior management to maintain operational readiness and seasonal planning.

Fleet Management

  • Oversee the lifecycle management of all fleet and support equipment and specialized fleet assets.
  • Develop and execute fleet acquisition, replacement, maintenance, and retirement strategies aligned with operational needs and budget targets.
  • Ensure preventive and corrective maintenance programs optimize equipment reliability, uptime, and safety.
  • Drive sustainability initiatives, including electrification, fuel efficiency, and emissions‑reduction strategies.

Safety, Compliance & Risk Management

  • Champion a strong safety culture across all fleet operations.
  • Support Safety with investigations of fleet incidents, accidents, or equipment failures and implement corrective actions.
  • Ensure safe operating certifications and training requirements are met and maintained.
  • Conduct audits, risk assessments, and continuous safety improvement initiatives.

Financial & Strategic Management

  • Develop and manage operating and capital budgets for fleet operations.
  • Control costs through asset optimization, vendor management, and process improvements.
  • Support long‑term operational and infrastructure planning aligned with business growth.
  • Analyze performance metrics and present operational results to senior leadership.

People Leadership & Development

  • Lead, coach, and develop managers, supervisors, and technical teams.
  • Build workforce plans to support 24/7 operations, peak seasons, and business growth.
  • Promote employee engagement, accountability, and talent development.
  • Foster collaboration across operations, maintenance, safety, engineering, and HR partners.

Vendor & Stakeholder Management

  • Manage relationships with equipment manufacturers, maintenance providers, and regulatory agencies.
  • Negotiate service contracts and monitor vendor performance against service‑level agreements (SLAs).
  • Act as a senior operations representative in audits, inspections, and stakeholder meetings.

Skills & Qualifications: 

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Engineering, Operations Management, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 10+ years of progressive leadership experience in fleet management or ground operations.
  • Demonstrated experience managing large, diverse fleets and operational environments.
  • Strong knowledge of fleet safety regulations and fleet compliance standards.
  • Proven people‑leadership experience managing multi‑site or large operational teams.

Preferred

  • Master’s degree (MBA, Engineering, or Operations).
  • Experience in logistics or large operations environments.
  • Familiarity with electric or alternative‑fuel fleet programs.
  • Certifications or fleet safety credentials.
