Hours: 8:00 - 5:00 Monday - Friday, 40 hours per week
Hiring Range: EHS Minimum $27.90/hour REHS Intern Minimum $20.20/hour

CHA is seeking a dedicated Environmental Health Specialist to promote and protect public health within the county. This role plays a vital role in preventing disease and safeguarding community well-being through education, surveillance, consultation, and enforcement of state and local environmental health laws. The successful candidate will work closely with community partners and regulated facilities to evaluate environmental health conditions, conduct inspections and provide public education to ensure compliance with health regulations
Primary Responsibilities:
- Conduct routine sanitation inspections for the Food, Lodging, and Institutions (FLI) program
- Issue permits and conduct inspections for regulated facilities
- Investigate food safety complaints and potential outbreak incidents
- Provide food safety education and guidance to the community and permitted facilities
- Assist with implementation and maintenance of FDA Retail Food Program Standards within the FLI program
- Support public health emergency response and special events as needed
- Inspect and permit Temporary Food Establishments (TFE's)
Education/Experience: Must meet one of the following:
- Graduation from an EHAC-accredited bachelor's or postgraduate degree program;
- Bachelor's or postgraduate degree plus 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours in physical, biological, natural, life, or health sciences and at least one year of experience in environmental health;
- Bachelor's or postgraduate degree in Public Health with at least one year of experience in environmental health.
License: Must maintain registration as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist by the North Carolina Board of Registered Environmental Health Examiners. Must maintain a valid N.C. driver's license. REHS Interns must become REHS within two years of registration with the North Carolina Board of Registered Environmental Health Examiners.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Must be able to gather, consolidate, analyze and evaluate facts to arrive at conclusions and develop recommended actions
- Ability to communicate orally and in writing the policies and regulations dealing with environmental protection
- Accurately write investigative or narrative reports
- Ability to maintain and use files and public records
