
Supervisor of Special Education (Re-advertised Position)
Job Description
POSITION OVERVIEW: To provide supervision, leadership and coordinates of Secondary/Elementary Special Education Programs.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assists in the development of policies and regulations for the department's operation.
- Develops, implements and evaluates the department's instructional program.
- Supervises and evaluates department members and coordinates their activities throughout the academic year.
- Presents and oversees a planned program of orientation and in-service activities throughout the academic year.
- Conducts department meetings on a regularly scheduled basis.
- Reviews and administers the department budget.
- Assists in the recruitment, screening, and assigning of departmental personnel.
- Annually submits to the Director an up-to-date inventory report of the department's supplies, textbook, equipment and supplementary materials.
- Attends and/or chairs Planning and Placement team meetings which may involve litigation, are out-of-district, or which may recommend excessive costs to the district.
- Ensures that the guidelines relating to the development, monitoring, review and revision of the Individual Educational Program are adhered to in accordance with state and federal legislature and regulations.
- With staff, assists in scheduling students for academic classes, determines what courses will be taught, assigns instructors, and decided the curriculum to be followed.
- Ensures the assessment/evaluation process is performed according to prescribed procedure.
- Assists in determinations as to completeness of assessment data for purposes of diagnostic and placement decisions.
- Ensures that the maintenance of files are appropriately kept in accordance with state and federal mandates.
- Assists in the interpretation of the program to staff, the Board and community.
- Assists the Director in overseeing the Young Parents' Program.
Performs such other department tasks as the Director of their designee may from time to time assign.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Connecticut Administrative Intermediate Certificate #092.
- Comprehensive Special Education Certification (endorsement #065 or #265)
- Major teaching experience in field of specialization.
- Extensive experience in Special Education.
- Bilingual skills are a plus but not required.
- Additional requirements as determined by the Board may be advisable.
- Additional requirements as the Board may deem advisable.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bilingual, English and Spanish
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Salary and work year are determined by the Board of Education and the Administrators' Bargaining Unit.
EVALUATION: Annually by the Executive Director of Student and Family Supports
