Job Description

Position: CTE / Dual Credit Criminal Justice Instructor

Location: Pocahontas County High School
Classification: Professional
Reports To: Building Principal
Evaluation: Performance in this position will be evaluated by the building principal/immediate supervisor and in accordance with WV State Code §18A-2-12, WV State Board Policy 5310, and PCBOE Evaluation Policy 3220.

FLSA STATUS: Exempt
 
Employment Term: Minimum 200 days annually, pursuant to WV Code §18-5-45; extended employment days may be established by the PCBOE.

Salary: Pursuant to WV Code §18A-4-2, in accordance with Pocahontas County Teacher Salary Schedule, commensurate with experience and education level plus competitive benefits package. Term of Employment: 2026-2027 School Year 

Certification / Qualifications:

  1. Education: Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, Criminology, Police Science, or a closely related field required.
  2. Master's Degree or at least 18 graduate semester hours in the teaching discipline is strongly (preferred) or industry experience
  3. Experience: Minimum of 3-5 years of professional experience in law enforcement, corrections, legal practice, or a related public safety field.
  4. Certification: Must possess or be eligible to obtain a valid West Virginia Career and Technical Education (CTE) teaching certificate in Law, Public Safety, and Security.
  5. Ability to meet and maintain adjunct faculty approval standards through our higher education dual credit partner (New River Community and Technical College).
  6. Criminal background check conducted pursuant to WV Code §18-5-15c and/or §18A-3-10, as appropriate.

Job Summary:

Pocahontas County School is seeking an energetic, dedicated Criminal Justice professional to lead our Career and Technical Education (CTE) Law and Public Safety program. In this role, you will prepare high school students for careers in law enforcement, corrections, and legal services, while enabling them to earn both high school and college credit through our dual enrollment partnership with New River Community and Technical College

Expectations / Duties and Responsibilities

  • Instruction & Dual Credit Teaching:
    Deliver engaging and rigorous instruction in Criminal Justice principles, forensic science, the judicial system, and law enforcement operations, aligned with both high school and college-level syllabi.
  • Curriculum Delivery:
    Plan, manage, and implement project-based learning and hands-on training that reflect current practices in the criminal justice field.
  • Student Mentorship:
    Provide guidance and mentorship to students pursuing post-secondary education and careers in public safety, law, and related fields.
  • CTSO Advising:
    Serve as advisor for the Career and Technical Student Organization (e.g., SkillsUSA or FPSA), coordinating student leadership activities, conferences, and competitions.
  • Advisory Council & Partnerships:
    Collaborate with local industry partners, law enforcement agencies, and community stakeholders to ensure curriculum alignment with workforce expectations. Work with colleagues and business/industry partners to expand student opportunities.
  • Simulated Workplace Implementation:
    Establish and maintain a simulated workplace environment that reflects West Virginia workforce standards, including expectations for professionalism, attendance, safety, and random drug testing protocols.
  • Collaboration & Program Relevance:
    Work collaboratively with colleagues, students, families, and the community to ensure the program remains relevant, rigorous, and aligned with real-world workforce needs.
  • Classroom Management:
    Establish and maintain appropriate student behavior and discipline in the classroom, on school grounds, and during school-sponsored activities.
  • Student Records & Documentation:
    Maintain accurate and timely records of student progress, performance, and interventions.
  • Professional Relationships:
    Build and sustain effective working relationships with students, parents/guardians, staff, administration, and community members.
  • Communication:
    Communicate regularly with parents and guardians regarding student progress and program expectations.
  • Professional Development:
    Participate in ongoing professional development to remain current with Career and Technical Education (CTE) standards, recommendations, and requirements.
  • Professionalism:
    Demonstrate consistent professionalism, including punctuality, preparedness, organization, and the ability to provide appropriate plans for substitute teachers when needed.
  • Ethics & Confidentiality:
    Maintain strict confidentiality and adhere to ethical standards in all professional responsibilities and interactions.
  • Additional Responsibilities:
    Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal/Superintendent or required to support the overall objectives of the school program.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Most commonly, the educational setting is indoors with outdoor settings for recess and field trip activities. The noise level in the work environment is low to moderate (20-60 dB). Exceptions include gymnasiums as well as vocational/ technical laboratories where the noise levels may be moderate to loud (60- 90 dB).
