Job Description

POSITION: Custodian / Summer Programs (Half-time)

LOCATION: Green Bank Elementary-Middle School

CLASSIFICATION: Service Personnel

LENGTH OF EMPLOYMENT: Green Bank Elementary-Middle School summer program will run from July 6, 2026, through July 31, 2026.

SALARY: State Minimum Salary Schedule for Service Personnel, State Custodial pay scale 

FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

REPORTS TO: Maintenance Director/Maintenance Supervisor; Summer Program Coordinator and/or Director

 

ANTICIPATED SUMMER PROGRAM HOURS:

Students: 8:30am-12pm with lunch from 11:30am-12pm and dismissal at 12pm

Summer Program Custodian is expected to work half-time (3 hours and 29 minutes) to cover lunch and dismissal; tentative hours are 9:00am-12:29pm

 

Qualifications:

High School Diploma, General Equivalent Development Certificate (GED) per West Virginia Code §18A-2-5
Personnel must be or have been classified in this category or must pass the state prescribed exam for this position per West Virginia Code §18A-4-8e.
Criminal background check per WV Code §18A-3-10.
The ability to perform the job duties and responsibilities of the position as contained in the Job Description

 

Job Summary: To perform duties which keep the county buildings and grounds clean and free of refuse. The custodian performs assigned custodial duties and repairs and receives supervision from the building administrator.

The custodian shall: 

1. Maintaining positive work habits. 

2. Performing duties efficiently and productively. 

3. Maintaining and/or upgrading skills. 

4. Maintaining and/or improving personal qualities. 

5. Perform their duties as assigned by principal/director.

 

Performance Responsibilities:

  • Keeps buildings and premises/grounds/campus, including sidewalks, driveways, and play areas neat, clean, and free of litter at all times;
  • Operate and maintain weed eater, lawn mower, floor scrubber, floor buffer, and vacuum cleaner.
  • Dispose of trash and waste materials; keeps restrooms, hallways, cafeterias/gyms, and classrooms clean
  • Arrange furniture for meals as needed
  • Disinfects all water fountains, floors in the restrooms, commodes, urinals, and sinks;
  • Washes all windows on both the inside and outside; cleans blinds
  • Dust, clean, polish fixtures, woodwork, and equipment.
  • Performs ground keeping duties as assigned;
  • Maintains all floors in a clean and attractive condition, including regular waxing, and in a good state of preservation;
  • Secures all windows and doors, turns off all lights (except emergency lights), and arms any alarm systems at the end of each day;
  • Regulates heat, ventilation, and air conditioning systems to provide a temperature appropriate to the season and to ensure economical usage of fuel, water, and electricity;
  • Performs minor maintenance repairs. Reports any major repairs to the principal;
  • Moves furniture or equipment within the buildings as required for various activities and as directed by the principal/supervisor;
  • Remains on the school premises during the school hours and during non-school hours when the use of the building has been authorized and his/her attendance has been required by the principal. The custodian is responsible for having the building ready for any night activities and any other activities which are regularly held at the school;
  • Conducts an ongoing program of general maintenance, upkeep, and repair;
  • Displays Flag (state and country); flies flags at half-staff when authorized
  • Maintains an inventory of supplies and equipment and informs the head custodian or principal of needs in advance so as not to hinder the continued performance of the assigned duties;
  • Corrects minor safety hazards when observed and/or immediately refers major safety hazards to building supervisor; responds to safety/hazard incidents appropriately
  • Complies with all state and county policies;
  • Perform all duties efficiently and productively.

     

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may frequently lift and/or move at least 10 pounds of materials. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material, the ability to adjust focus. The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff members.
