A vacancy exists for a full-time Behavior Mentor within the Head Start Program in the Division of Student Services of the Chester County Intermediate Unit. This is a 200-day position, working with preschoolers.

Summary:
The Head Start Behavior Mentor will play a critical role in supporting preschool students with challenging behaviors in Head Start classrooms IU Countywide. This individual will respond to crisis behaviors, implement Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS), including Check In Check Out, and deliver small group social skills instruction. The Behavior Mentor will work collaboratively with teachers, administrators, and support staff to create a positive learning environment where all students can thrive.

Essential Job Responsibilities: 

  • Respond promptly to crisis behaviors, de-escalating situations and ensuring a safe and supportive environment for all students.
  • Implement PBIS strategies, including Check In Check Out, to help students improve their behavior and achieve individualized goals.
  • Facilitate small group social skills instruction, focusing on building emotional regulation, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills among preschool students.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers and support staff to develop and implement Positive Behavior Support Plans (PBSPs) tailored to individual student needs.
  • Monitor and document student progress, adjusting interventions as needed to ensure student success.
  • Support staff in applying behavior strategies and provide guidance on best practices for managing challenging behaviors in the classroom.
  • Communicate effectively with parents and guardians regarding student progress and strategies for behavior improvement at home.
  • Participate in team meetings, professional development, and training sessions focused on behavior management and intervention techniques.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required; Associate's or Bachelor's degree in education, psychology, or a related field preferred.
  • Experience working with preschool-aged children with challenging behaviors required.
  • Current RBT certification or willingness to obtain Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) certification within one year of hire required
  • Previous experience in an early childhood or preschool setting preferred
  • Experience with implementing Check In Check Out and facilitating small group social skills instruction preferred
  • Familiarity with developing and monitoring Positive Behavior Support Plans (PBSPs) in conjunction and with the support of the Behavior Specialist and Behavior Consultant preferred

  • Strong understanding of behavior management techniques, particularly PBIS strategies.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a strong commitment to supporting student success.
  • Ability to remain calm and effective in high-stress or crisis situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a diverse team of educators, parents, and support personnel.
  • Commitment to fostering an inclusive, positive, and supportive educational environment.

Professional or Other Required Clearances

  • Current police, child abuse, FBI fingerprint, and NSOR clearances within 1 year required

Salary Range (2026-2027 SY):
Support, Band 12, $27.82 - $36.87/hr. 
*Placement on band is based on years of direct experience in a comparable role.
200 day position, 7.5 hours per day, 5 days per week
