POSITION: Legal Secretary

SALARY: $24.03 to 30.00, per hour DOE

REPORTS TO: Managing Prosecutor

LOCATION: Prosecutor Office, Nespelem, WA 

 

Basic Functions: This is a Non-Exempt position. Performs specialized secretarial, technical, and administrative support duties, including (but not limited to) taking and transcribing of complex, specialized, or highly technical legal dictation, preparing correspondence, greeting visitors, and maintaining up-to-date files and libraries, basic research, and record keeping. The Legal Secretary requires demonstrating the following skills and abilities: highly advanced keyboarding skills; working knowledge of legal terminology•, ability to produce original formats and documents in word processing software; the ability to conduct basic legal research; and the ability to maintain up-to-date and organized legal case files. Advancement to Paralegal requires the stated qualifications to assist Attorneys with processes such as discovery, depositions, and pleadings and restitution.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Training: 

  • The position typically requires an AA degree
  • 2 years of progressive experience in a legal or senior administrative level preferred. Additional higher education may substitute for some experience.
  • Requires a valid driver's license and must be eligible for the Tribes' vehicle insurance. Must maintain license and insurance eligibility throughout employment

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • The position requires specialized knowledge of modem legal secretarial and legal office principles, organization, practices, and methods.
  • Requires in-depth knowledge of the special practices, technicalities, formats, and work methods for a legal department.
  • Requires considerable Knowledge of English grammar and composition, business and legal formats, spelling, proofreading, filing, and record keeping.
  • Requires well-developed human relation skills to communicate technical and confidential information, to employ specific lines of inquiry, and to maintain harmony in a work setting. Requires special skills employing interviewing techniques.
  • Requires the ability to perform all of the relevant duties of the position.
  • Requires the ability to initiate, develop, and maintain office information systems.
  • Requires the ability to conduct research from various sources, to perform basic mathematical operations; and to prepare legal correspondence and briefs.
  • Requires the ability to originate, organize, and maintain legal case files.
  • Requires the ability to operate voice recording devices.
  • Requires the ability to understand statutes, court decisions, ordinances, resolutions, and legal documents.
  • Requires the ability to write correspondence on complex and sensitive matters in a professional manner.
  • Requires the ability to maintain confidential and sensitive information. Prioritize work in order to meet multiple deadlines and conflicting schedules and maintain calendars.
  • Requires the ability to work in a fast-paced environment with continually changing priorities and deadlines, to remain calm, and to work productively as a member of a team devoted sensitive to serving its Tribal population

Note: Pursuant to Tribal Policy, if this position is safety sensitive it is subject to pre-employment drug testing. In addition, this position is subject to reasonable suspicion and post-accident drug testing.

If required of this position, you must possess and maintain a valid Washington State driver’s license and be eligible for the Tribes’ Vehicle Insurance. In addition, this position may be subject to pre-employment background clearances. If applicable, these clearances must be maintained throughout employment.
