Role: Head of Resident Doctors
Location: The Harborne Hospital, Part of HCA Healthcare. Mindelsohn Way, Birmingham B15 2TQ
Hours: 40 Hours Per Week, Monday - Friday, 80% managerial time, 20% Clinical Time.
Contract Type: Fixed Term Contract (Mat Cover) – Until May 2027
Salary: Competitive (DOE)

As a trained doctor, you will be best placed to be responsible for direct line management of Resident Doctors and accountable for the services they provide at the Harborne Hospital.
What you’ll do:
- Be the role model for all Resident Doctors, acting as both the senior clinical expert and the primary people leader for the Resident Doctor Workforce.
- This is a role aligned to the Harborne Hospital, their go-to Resident Doctor site lead, to ensure consistent, high-quality care is delivered, attending to business needs, in line with Consultant led private patient activity levels.
- You will work in partnership with our hospital's leadership teams, Chief Medical Officer, Lead Consultants, Chief Nursing Officer and CEO, and those who work closely with Resident Doctors onsite.
- The role is to be accountable for people managing Resident Doctors, operationally and commercially responsible for a range of different service provisions, including General Surgery and Acute Medicine and you will also have oversight of Critical Care.
- As a people manager, you will provide direct line management to circa 20-25 Resident Doctors, from a range of diverse background and specialist areas of training, you are responsible for managing performance, attendance, conduct, training, cost, wellbeing and their development, to ensure continuous, safe and effective service, supporting each department.
- You will lead on recruiting new Resident Doctors for permanent and temporary vacancies. This includes proving your new employees with a robust orientation and supervision programme. Utilising your Clinical and leadership skills to provide mentorship, support and development and HCA ways of working training.
- Work in partnership with our sites HR and Finance departments, you will oversee employment contract agreements, study agreements, and managing budgets resourcefully, this includes any workforce-related costs; salaries, education, or temporary workforce usage and spend.
- You will oversee rota management, ensuring staffing levels are responsive to changes in patient census and patient needs. Flexing bank and agency use, dependent upon patient ratios and activity, to maximise cost management.
- You will consistently strive for excellence at all times, providing guidance and support on potential new ways of working, improving efficiencies, Quality Improvement Projects or Increasing Patient Satisfaction opportunities, including leading audits, projects or research.
- You will also be encouraged to work part clinical too, among your colleagues on ad-hoc shifts to maintain your clinical skills, and this will be to the level of a Resident Doctor (SPR)
What you’ll bring:
- MBBS medical qualification. Fully registered with the GMC and current licence to practice in the UK.
- An additional post-graduate qualification.
- Doctors must be trained to minimum ST5 or equivalent.
- Essential requirement is experience directly line managing or supervising junior doctors, and be fully conversant with people management practices and policies, training and compliance requirements.
- Experience of budget management, roster management, and making commercial decisions on workforce management.
- Good inter-personal skills with an ability to work co-operatively in a multidisciplinary setting, able to present to board level and integrate with senior management teams.
