Description of Work
The North Carolina Department of Administration / Facility Management Division is seeking applicants for a Facility Maintenance Technician – Mechanical Trade position (working title: Maintenance Const. Tech III.This position is responsible for the maintenance and repair of electrical and fire alarm systems and equipment in and around State owned buildings. Position is responsible for the preventive maintenance program of all generators and fire pumps in the building allocated to the Department of Administration.
This position is part of a multi-craft crew assigned to provide maintenance services to all buildings maintained by the Department of Administration, Facility Management Division. The Maintenance Construction Technician will work with, installations, maintenance, and repairs to all types of electrical, plumbing and pneumatic components in the State government complex. Specific duties will include installing, maintaining, and repairing diesel powered emergency generators to include checking anti-freeze, changing oil and all filters, replacing belts, fuel pumps, water pumps, exhaust systems. Position will be responsible for maintaining all electrical and pneumatic controls as well as installing, maintaining, and repairing lighting and lighting fixtures, electrical outlets, distribution panels and branch circuits. Duties will also include pulling wires of all sizes, types and voltages to equipment and power sources, troubleshooting and repairing fire alarm systems. Position will also work with diesel and electric fire pumps, sprinkler systems which will include maintenance and repairs of wet and dry systems. Other duties include replacing belts on air compressors, changing oil in air compressors. The installation, alteration, repair and maintenance of all plumbing to include air, gas, water, and waste disposal systems will be expected along with other duties assigned.
The work requires the position to be available for some overtime and emergency call back on a rotating basis to include evenings, weekends, and holidays. Position to be assigned to the downtown Raleigh complex and outlying areas.

ADDITIONAL EXPECTATIONS:
Ability to install, repair and maintain fuel pumps, maintain pneumatic controls, experience in the repair and maintenance of fire alarm systems, and electrical controls.
MANAGEMENT PREFERENCES:
Management prefers at least two years of experience working with diesel generators, fire pumps and sprinkler systems. Certification in any of these disciplines are a plus.
NECESSARY REQUIREMENTS:
Individual hired must be familiar with building, life and safety codes; capable of strenuous lifting, crawling and working at heights up to sixty-five feet or more as well as working in confined spaces such as steam tunnels and manholes. Medical certification is required to verify the individual’s ability to wear and use a respirator. This is a condition of employment. Employee is required to wear a State provided uniform and certain safety equipment as well as follow established safety regulations and procedures. Candidate must present proof of a valid NC Driver’s License and proof of an acceptable driving record. Out of State Applicants must have valid Driver's License and acquire NC Driver's License within 60 days of hire.
Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two (2) years of progressive experience in the assigned trade areas; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Requirements
May require current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations Part 82, Subpart F.
