Network Engineer Specialist
Job Description
Role Main Purpose:
The IT Network Engineer is responsible for the maintenance of the SPL’s network infrastructure. This position necessitates a comprehensive understanding of networking principles, switches, network topologies, Wi-Fi controllers, wireless technologies, network protocols and network administration. The ideal candidate will ensure the reliability, security, and efficiency of SPL’s network systems to support the IT infrastructure manager and IT operations effectively. The IT Network Engineer will provide second-line support for network-related incidents, facilitate the escalation of requests from the service desk, and report directly to the Infrastructure Manager while collaborating with security, operations, service desk and applications teams.
Key Responsibilities:
- Networking:
- Maintain the SPL LAN, WAN, and VPN networks.
- Apply network policies and procedures to ensure security and compliance.
- Configure and maintain network hardware such as routers, switches, and firewalls.
- Use network monitoring tools to identify and resolve issues proactively.
- Enhance network performance using regular analysis and upgrades.
- Apply network redundancy and disaster recovery plans
- Manage IP addressing and subnetting to ensure efficient network utilization.
- Apply the Quality of Service (QoS) policies to priorities critical network traffic.
- Switches:
- Configure network switches to ensure efficient data flow and connectivity.
- Implement VLANs to segment network traffic and enhance security.
- Monitor switch performance and troubleshoot issues promptly.
- Ensure firmware updates and patches are applied regularly to maintain switch security and performance.
- Optimize switch configurations for high availability and redundancy.
- Network Topologies:
- Design and implement various network topologies to meet organizational needs.
- Ensure network topologies are documented and updated regularly.
- Implement and manage network segmentation to enhance security and performance.
- Wi-Fi Controllers:
- Configure and manage Wi-Fi controllers to ensure robust and secure wireless connectivity.
- Monitor and troubleshoot Wi-Fi controller issues.
- Apply security measures to protect wireless networks from unauthorized access.
- Optimize Wi-Fi controller settings for various devices and applications.
- Conduct site surveys to ensure optimal placement of wireless access points.
- Wi-Fi and Wireless Networks:
- Deploy Wi-Fi networks to ensure robust and secure wireless connectivity.
- Monitor and troubleshoot wireless network issues.
- Implement security measures to protect wireless networks from unauthorized access.
- Optimize wireless network performance for various devices and applications.
- Network Administration:
- Maintain network infrastructure, ensuring high availability and performance.
- Perform regular backups, updates, and patch management.
- Monitor network health and troubleshoot issues promptly.
- Implement disaster recovery plans and ensure data integrity.
- Maintain detailed documentation of network configurations and changes.
- ITIL and IT Service Management:
- Implement ITIL best practices for IT service management.
- Maintain network service catalogues, SLAs, and performance metrics.
- Ensure efficient incident, problem, and change management processes.
- Continuously improve IT service delivery and customer satisfaction.
- Second-Line Support:
- Act as second-line support for escalations from the service desk.
- Troubleshoot and escalate complex network issues to the Infrastructure Manager
- Provide guidance and training to service desk staff to help identify network issues and assign tickets for networking.
- Ensure timely and effective resolution of escalated issues to minimize business impact.
- Maintain detailed documentation of escalated issues and their resolutions
Education & Professional Experiences:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in network engineering.
- Strong knowledge of networking, switches, network topologies, Wi-Fi controllers, and wireless networks.
- Experience with network administration and ITIL frameworks.
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical abilities.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
Preferred Certifications:
- Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA)
- Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP)
- Certified Wireless Network Professional (CWNP)
- ITIL Foundation Certification
- CompTIA Network+
