Job Description

Seattle City Light, a department of the City of Seattle, is one of the nation’s largest municipally owned utilities in terms of the number of customers served. The Customer Care Division is recruiting for two Customer Engineering Supervisors. These positions will supervise the work of Electrical Service Representatives, Senior Electrical Service Representatives, and administrative staff, who provide administrative and field support services for commercial and residential electric service installations. The candidates selected for this position will be assigned to work at one of City Light’s Service Centers. These positions will report to the Customer Engineering Manager.

Here is more about what you’ll be doing: 

  • Responds to a variety of customer inquiries and problems concerning utility service; provides technical guidance as required. 
  • Reviews and resolves customer inquiries and complaints; serves as a technical liaison to customers; reviews and approves customer contracts and agreements. 
  • Provides guidance and assistance to engineers, architects, electrical contractors, and building owners and agents regarding new or expanded electric service requirements.
  • Assists in the coordination of internal services to meet customer expectations.
  • Monitors data sources to identify anomalies that can disrupt project timelines and completion, and adjusts resources to address those anomalies.
  • Collaborates with other work groups in City Light and other City departments to address and resolve barriers to successful project completion.
  • Reviews and approves workgroup time sheets and expenditures. 
  • Plans and coordinates special customer advisory services in the areas of underground utility projects and requests for improved lighting systems, such as streetlights and floodlights. 
  • Provides information and assistance to the public regarding City Light programs and requirements.
  • Plans, develops, and delivers training to staff on the work performed by the Customer Engineering team, and participates in the performance management process.
  • Performs the duties of an Electric Service Representative when complex issues arise or on an as-needed basis.

Required Qualifications: 

In addition to the skills and experience mentioned below, a successful applicant will have experience that reflects a commitment to creating fair and equitable outcomes and has: 

Requires a minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in residential and commercial advisory work in the electric power service field, equivalent to two years as City of Seattle Senior Electrical Service Representative; and the ability to supervise. A baccalaureate degree in electrical engineering, business administration or a related field may substitute for a maximum of two years of the required non-senior level experience (or a combination of educa­tion and/or training and/or experience which provides an equivalent back­ground required to perform the work of the class).

Work Environment/Physical Demands

The majority of the work of this class is performed in a normal City work/office environment; however, caution is required when conducting field inspections of high voltage electrical connections.

License, Certification and Other Requirements

Current State of Washington driver's license.

Desired Qualifications - You will be successful if you have the following experience, skills, and abilities:

  • Significant experience with electrical service installation regulations and methods applicable to residential and commercial buildings. 
  • Thorough knowledge of electrical principles, practices and terminology, and the principles and practices of energy conservation relative to the efficient usage of electrical energy. 
  • Able to organize, instruct, and supervise a staff of technical employees and establish and maintain effective relations with contractors, associates, and residential and commercial customers.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment in recommending revised policies and procedures in the assigned area, reordering priorities of subordinates based on shifting workload, and resolving customer complaints and inquiries that are referred by subordinates. 
  • Ability to learn and operate new electronic programs and apply the knowledge to existing/new business practices.

The full salary range for this position is $52.17 to $60.74 per hour.
