Job Description
Job Summary
Reporting to the VP, Project Management Office, the Costing Engineer will be responsible for project and product estimation, data research, quote creation, and cost structure coordination in partnership with the Program Management, Finance, and Engineering departments. This position will also perform cost analysis of current product through variance calculations, working closely with the Finance team.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
Quoting & Estimating Leadership
Lead estimating activities: Lead the estimating process for multiple sites and technologies.
RFQ management: Prioritize incoming requests for quote (RFQs), summarize complex business cases, and ensure all technical and commercial requirements are communicated to internal stakeholders.
Cost translation: Apply understanding of product specifications to convert engineering estimates into formal cost quotes, ensuring all labor, material, and overhead components are accurately captured.
Design change analysis: Evaluate and estimate the fiscal impact of product design iterations or engineering change orders.
Financial Analysis
Profitability assurance: Analyze quotes to ensure products meet required margin profiles and long-term profitability targets.
Variance analysis: Partner closely with Finance to monitor internal production profitability through detailed variance calculations, identifying gaps between estimated and actual costs.
Market adjustments: Analyze production performance and market trends to recommend price adjustments or cost reduction strategies.
Tool optimization: Continuously identify, develop, and refine estimating tools and methodologies to improve accuracy and response times.
Other financial analysis: Provide analysis to other departments as needed.
Cross-Functional Coordination
Stakeholder liaison: Build and maintain effective relationships with the Sales, Supply Chain, Program Management, and Engineering teams and coordinate quote requests with these teams.
Technical reviews: Coordinate and lead technical reviews as needed to validate manufacturing feasibility and cost assumptions.
Business case assembly: Participate in internal and customer meetings and assemble comprehensive business cases.
Qualifications
Required:
Bachelor’s degree in a related field and 2+ years of relevant experience (e.g., in engineering, sales, finance) or a combination of education and experience providing equivalent knowledge and skills
Experience working with product specifications, estimates, and quotes
Demonstrated ability to be proactive, resourceful, and self-directed
Demonstrated focus on driving end results
Demonstrated ability to handle multiple workstreams while staying organized and prioritizing appropriately and delivering accurate, reliable, and thorough results
Effective interpersonal and communication skills
Effective analytical skills
Proficiency with Microsoft Office/365 software
Demonstrated capability to develop and upskill
Preferred:
Experience with medical device estimating and quoting
Experience with PCBA manufacturing, device assembly, and injection molding
Strong capability to lead and influence cross‑functional teams
Experience with print reading and CAD model
Experience with ISO quality systems
Location
This role is based on-site at our Arden Hills location in the Minneapolis/St. Paul metro area, with occasional international travel (<10%).
