
Finance Manager, Japan
Job Description
Key Responsibilities
The Finance Manager owns statutory compliance and financial reporting in Japan, supports the implementation of Microsoft Dynamics 365 (D365), and leads a finance team. This role includes people management responsibilities and requires the ability to lead, coach, and develop team members. Strong expertise in Japanese regulatory frameworks, financial operations, and ERP-driven process transformation is essential.
Compliance & Statutory Reporting
- Take full ownership of compliance with Japanese regulatory requirements, including invoicing systems, Consumption Tax, Corporate Income Tax, withholding taxes, and other applicable laws
- Oversee the preparation, review, and timely submission of all statutory filings, ensuring accuracy and compliance
- Act as the primary point of contact for external auditors, tax advisors, and regulatory authorities
- Ensure accounting records are maintained in accordance with Japanese GAAP (J-GAAP), IFRS, and group reporting standards
- Proactively monitor regulatory changes and assess their impact on the business
Financial Management & Reporting
- Lead month-end and year-end closing processes
- Prepare financial statements, management reports (MIS), and financial dashboards
- Ensure the integrity of the general ledger, balance sheet reconciliations, and financial reporting
- Manage intercompany transactions and reconciliations, ensuring accurate and timely group reporting
Cash Flow Management & Treasury Coordination
- Prepare and monitor short-term and long-term cash flow forecasts to ensure sufficient liquidity
- Proactively identify potential funding gaps and coordinate funding requests with the central treasury team (UK)
- Provide timely and accurate cash reporting to regional and global stakeholders
- Monitor working capital (receivables and payables) and highlight risks and improvement opportunities
D365 Implementation & Finance Transformation
- Act as a key finance stakeholder in D365 implementation projects
- Drive finance requirements, system configuration alignment, and user acceptance testing (UAT)
- Champion process standardization, automation, and best practices across finance operations
- Collaborate with IT teams and external consultants to ensure smooth implementation and stabilization
Internal Controls & Risk Management
- Ensure adherence to internal control frameworks, policies, and procedures
- Support audit readiness and risk mitigation initiatives
Process Improvement & Automation
- Identify opportunities to streamline and standardize financial processes
- Drive efficiency, scalability, and automation across finance operations
Stakeholder & Global Coordination
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams (e.g., HR, Procurement, Operations)
- Liaise with auditors, tax advisors, and external consultants
- Align local finance practices with global policies and reporting standards
- Lead, manage, and develop the finance team (e.g., 2–3 members), including coaching, training, and performance management
Key Stakeholders
- Asia Leadership – Regional Finance Director, Asia Finance Controller
- Japan Finance – Japan Financial Controller, CBRE Finance Team
- D365 Program Team – Global Program Lead, Program Director, Asia Program Manager
Education and Experience
- JCPA or USCPA preferred; MBA (Finance) is a plus
- 6–10 years of relevant experience in finance and accounting
- Mandatory 2–3 years of people management experience, including direct supervision of team members
- Strong knowledge of Japanese taxation, compliance, and regulatory frameworks
- Proven experience with ERP systems (D365 preferred)
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
- Experience in transformation projects or system implementations is highly desirable
