Reporting to the Senior Manager, Quality Assurance Laboratory, you will serve as an analytical expert responsible for supporting the delivery of LCBO Quality Assurance Laboratory testing programs to ensure LCBO products are of high quality, authentic, safe to consume and compliant with regulations. You will also lead the delivery of analytical services offered to the beverage alcohol industry to ensure they are reliable, compliant with the requirements of our clients and those of an accredited ISO 17025 and ISO 9001 quality management system.

About the Role
Analytical/Technical Expertise
- Provide specialized analytical testing services using advanced analytical instrumentation such as GC-MS, GC-FID, HPLC, LC-MS, ICP-MS, CFA to detect and quantify various compounds present in beverage alcohol products
- Apply expert knowledge of instrumental analysis and analytical technologies to operate, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, validate and calibrate laboratory instrumentation ensuring optimum performance
- Assess and troubleshoot instrument and analytical method performance to ensure data validity, integrity, reliability and accuracy
- Process, review, validate, interpret and report results in accordance with the laboratory Quality Management System policies and procedures
Research & Development
- Engage in research activities to develop new or enhanced methods of analysis
- Perform data and statistical analysis of method capabilities and performance; support calculation of method/measurement uncertainty
- Support the research of new analytical instrumentation and technologies that can elevate the capabilities of the LCBO laboratory and optimize efficiencies
Laboratory Quality Management System
- Adhere to the requirements of the laboratory quality management system and drive its continuous improvement
- Support laboratory compliance and accreditation to ISO 17025 and ISO 9001 standards
- Create, maintain and update laboratory documentation and technical records to ensure systematic process execution and compliance with quality systems requirements
- Support the development and implementation of various laboratory technical or environmental programs
- Ensure compliance with safety standards and policies
- Provide training and mentorship to laboratory personnel
Laboratory Operations Support
- Assist laboratory management as required by providing technical input relevant to analytical testing methodologies, instrumentation and QMS programs and processes
- Maintain laboratory supplies and chemical inventories
- Provide support for general laboratory and administrative tasks as assigned by the laboratory management
- Perform other duties and accept additional responsibilities as assigned to support the evolving needs of the department
About You
- Minimum B.Sc. in Chemistry, or related scientific fields
- Significant relevant experience and expert knowledge in analytical chemistry and applications used in a regulated laboratory environment using advanced analytical instrumentation such as GC-MS, GC-FID, LC-MS, HPLC, ICP-MS, CFA inclusive of sample preparation, extraction, purification/isolation and analysis.
- In depth knowledge and experience in operation and maintenance of advanced analytical instrumentation including complex troubleshooting and repair and activities related to instrument commissioning
- Solid experience in method development and validation including design of experiments
- Experience in data analysis, proficiency in statistical analysis
- Ability to interpret and present scientific and technical data and develop options and recommendations. Strong technical writing and documentation development skills.
- Strong knowledge and experience in Quality Management Systems in accordance with relevant quality standards and/or regulatory/compliance requirements and their application in laboratory settings
- Strong computer literacy i.e. knowledge in relevant MS Office software and other data processing applications, including statistical functions and tools/software
- Strong analytical, problem solving and critical thinking skills, high ability to exercise sound judgment and work effectively with minimum direction and supervision.
- High level of initiative, with demonstrated focus on the continuous improvement of analytical services and internal operations.
- Strong attention to detail, complemented by effective organizational and time management skills with a high ability to prioritize competing demands and multi-task effectively in a dynamic, fast paced, collaborative environment and deliver timely results with high quality and accuracy. Proficient in coaching, mentoring and fostering quality culture.
