The Library is seeking a part-time librarian to deliver quality library services in the Central Library’s Teen Center. The librarian will work as part of the division team and perform basic library work, primarily reference, with teens, their parents and caregivers, as well as any educators and adult patrons accessing the young adult collection. The part-time librarian will also be expected to cover desks on occasion in the Children’s Center.
This position requires professional knowledge and judgment, including, but not limited to, reference and reader’s advisory services, collection development, and individual/group programming. The schedule is 12-17 hours per week: 2.5 hours on evenings Monday through Thursday, and 7 hours on Saturdays. The weekday schedule is negotiable.
This is a part-time position. The salary for this position is $38.68 per hour.
Responsibilities
Provides reference and reader’s advisory services for all age groups utilizing print and electronic resources
Promotes the children's and young adult collections
Interprets and implements BPL policy
Performs other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited library school; NYS Public Librarian Certificate
General experience working with the public and diverse communities
Excellent customer relations and communication skills, especially with teens
Knowledge of teen literature and programming and development, as well as a working knowledge of children’s
Experience providing teen programming desirable
Basic understanding of current and emerging library technology, service and programming trends for children and teens, and urban public library issues
Familiarity with internet, electronic databases, social media, and basic computer applications
Multilingual skills highly desirable
Candidates must be flexible, able to handle multiple competing priorities and tasks, adaptable to change and able to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-volume environment
Candidates must be enthusiastic, positive, and focused on solutions when challenges arise
Ability to bend, reach, sit and stand as needed
Ability to work evenings and weekends
