Part of the Outreach Services department, Justice Initiatives works to support incarcerated and formerly incarcerated patrons and their families and connect them in meaningful ways to the library. Outreach Services at Brooklyn Public Library develops innovative programs and partnerships to increase access to library resources. The Department supports responsive services to immigrant communities, older adults, people experiencing homelessness, families impacted by incarceration and veterans.
Justice Initiatives is seeking a part-time Outreach Assistant to join a small team to support the department’s work in New York City jails and prisons. The Outreach Assistant will be involved in a wide variety of public library work including direct service to incarcerated patrons, collection management, outreach, programming and research.
This is a part-time position. The salary for this position is $25 per hour for up to a 19-hour work week.

Responsibilities
Provide in-person library services in New York City jails
Provide in-person and virtual reference service
Assist with distribution and circulation of books and library materials to outreach locations.
Conduct outreach to connect patrons and new users with library services.
Assist with facilitation of programs such as book discussion groups and Daddy/Mommy and Me
Assist with collection management
Collect program statistics and provide reports as needed
Participate in relevant trainings and meetings
Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
High School degree required, BA preferred
Experience working with diverse communities
Strong oral and written communication skills
Strong organization and planning skills
Ability to work with a team and independently on projects
Understanding of libraries and library services
Familiarity with internet, electronic databases, social media and basic computer applications
Moderate lifting required – up to 25lbs
Spanish, Russian, or Chinese language proficiency preferred
Knowledge of the justice system & it's impact on the community a plus
Ability to work up to 19 hours per week, evenings as needed
Ability to travel to library locations and outpost libraries in correctional facilities
