Job Description

SALARY

$61,733.50 - $77,166.85

JOB SUMMARY

Under general supervision, reviews and analyzes crime reports; interprets patterns and trends; disseminates information and makes recommendations related to possible suspects, potential crimes, location of future crimes and methods of operation.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Monitor, analyze and evaluate patterns and trends of criminal activity using statistical analysis and other analytical methodologies to assist the division(s) in meeting objectives.

    • Prepare comprehensive analytical products and reports including but not limited to:

    • Crime bulletins and summaries

    • Recommend investigative direction, provide oral briefings and presentations

    • Facilitate intelligence and crime analysis meetings.

  • Research, retrieve and evaluate confidential information including but not limited to:

    • Complex criminal investigations

    • Create automated files.

    • Databases and spreadsheets for information management functions.

  • Interpret information regarding criminal activity in internal and external reports, registers, records and databases.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Establish and maintain professional contacts including but not limited to with:

    • Experts

    • Analytical counterparts

    • Educators and researchers

    • Liaison with other agencies and the public.

  • Respond to requests for crime information from the news media, civic organizations, general public and outside agencies.

  • Participate in training various criminal investigative techniques.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Knowledge of office and administrative practices and procedures.

  • Skill in using PC Software including current Microsoft Office Suite of applications.

  • Skill with organization and attention to detail.

  • Ability to understand mathematical calculations involving fractions, percentages, and decimals.

  • Ability to work within a set schedule.

  • Ability to prioritize deadlines and tasks. 

  • Ability to learn new systems and procedures quickly.

  • Knowledge of offense elements as specified by the Texas Penal Code, Code of Criminal

  • Procedure, city ordinances, policies, and procedures.

  • Knowledge of TCIC/NCIC computerized database and proper procedures for use.

  • Knowledge of computers including, relevant spreadsheet, graphic, mapping, mainframe and network applications; word processing, the Internet and other computer software.

  • Knowledge of research techniques.

  • Knowledge of interviewing techniques and methods.

  • Knowledge of modern police record systems.

  • Knowledge of Business English, spelling and punctuation.

  • Knowledge of modern office practices and procedures.

  • Ability to interpret and understand criminal law, Code of Criminal Procedure, city ordinances, policies and procedures.

  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing and prepare comprehensive reports.

  • Ability to operate a variety of office equipment including, but not limited to PC, fax machine, calculator and copier.

  • Ability to perform a variety of physical skills including, but not limited to seeing, sorting, typing and writing.

  • Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication and make fine discriminations in sound.

Qualifying Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, statistics, computer science, or a related field.

  • One (1) year of experience in crime research, crime analysis, law enforcement or related field.

  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Knowledge of advanced analytical techniques, such as predictive modeling and link analysis.

  • Advanced skill in MS Access, Excel and ArcGIS

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Certification from the International Association of Crime Analysts (IACA) or equivalent professional credentials.

Employment Screenings Required:

  • Criminal background check

  • CJIS complete background check

  • Drug and Alcohol Testing

Arlington Police Department General Orders prohibit employees from having tattoos on any part of the hands (below the cuff of a long-sleeve shirt), neck, face, head, eyelids, mouth, and ears, with the following exceptions:

  • Tattoo of one wedding band on the left-hand ring finger.

  • Professional style permanent facial make-up on the eyebrows, eyeline, cheeks, and lips.
