SALARY:

$18.79 - $23.49

JOB SUMMARY:

Under general supervision, this position is responsible for learn-to-swim instruction in a group or one-on-one format.  The Water Safety Instructor provides swim instruction to youth and adults in both group and individual settings at a municipal aquatic facility. They teach swimming techniques and water safety skills based on established curriculum standards, such as those from the American Red Cross. Responsibilities include assessing participant skill levels, creating lesson plans, and maintaining a safe, inclusive learning environment. The role also involves tracking progress, following safety protocols, and working with aquatic staff to support program delivery and emergency preparedness.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Prepare and monitor course and participation records and evaluate participant swimming abilities to ensure an appropriate level of instruction in an enjoyable and safe setting.
  • Instructors must have strong customer service skills and be able to work effectively with swim participants of all ages.
  • Create lesson plans and instruction in compliance with American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Program
  • Maintain certification in Water Safety Instruction through the American Red Cross
  • Communicate with parents, volunteers, and participants in a respectful and professional manner

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Knowledge of American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim curriculum and instructional techniques.
  • Knowledge of pool safety rules, emergency procedures, and first aid practices.
  • Knowledge of fundamental water competency skills and related disciplines.
  • Skill in swimming and demonstrating proper techniques across all swim levels.
  • Skill in providing customer service and communicating effectively with participants, parents, and coworkers by oral and written means.
  • Skill in preparing lesson plans and maintaining accurate participant records.
  • Skill with organization and attention to detail. 
  • Ability to enforce safety rules and respond calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Ability to work cooperatively as part of a team in a fast-paced aquatic environment.
  • Ability to adapt teaching methods to accommodate different learning styles and abilities.
  • Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment utilizing knowledge of the department’s policies. 
  • Ability to work independently under general instructions. 
  • Ability to perform a variety of physical skills including but not limited to filing, pulling, seeing, sorting, squatting, standing, stooping, twisting body, typing, walking, and writing. 
  • Ability to prioritize deadlines and tasks. 
  • Ability to learn new systems and procedures quickly. 
  • Ability to work within a set schedule.

Qualifying Education and Experience:

  • Must be enrolled in high school or have a high school diploma or GED.
  • Must possess or obtain certification as a Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) or Basic Swim Instructor (BSI) within six (6) months of hire.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Must be able to complete certification requirements for CPR/First Aid.
