Teacher of the Deaf: Special Assignment

Position Summary:
 
Provide direct services for a student currently enrolled in the Meadowood Program.  The Teacher of the Deaf/Special Assignment will have the responsibility of providing 1:1 cross-curricular full academic content instruction, social/recreational and communicative programming needs for the student. The position will be a part of the district-wide Deaf and Hard of Hearing Team. 
 
Special Assignments/Responsibilities - Duties
 

  • Teacher of the Deaf/Special Assignment will instruct a student in the elementary setting for all content academic course work including:; ELA, Math, Science/Social Studies, Sign Language skills, with an oral language philosophy supplemented with sign language supports and PECS.
  • The TOD must be willing to incorporate or adapt age, ability, and achievement level appropriate materials and procedures in order for the student to progress across the academic curriculum.
  • The TOD must be willing to meet weekly with the Lead Teacher of the DHH to review student progress, curriculum goals, materials/adaptations and technology troubleshooting needs.
  • Teamwork is essential, as each teacher will collaborate with teachers and aides in curriculum planning and the implementation of instructional units.  In addition, this assignment requires an individual to work with other support personnel (e.g., OT and SLP) to provide an integrated and well-rounded instructional program for the student.
  • The TOD is responsible for the development and implementation of the IEP goal areas and for implementing instructional activities consistent with the educational mission and philosophy of the program.  This approach requires unit planning and experience-based instruction, emphasizes a multicultural orientation involving the Deaf community and Deaf role models and the natural acquisition of language according to the principles of normal child growth and development.
  • The TOD will develop appropriate Individual Education Program (IEP) goals based on data and records student progress and other data as required per IEPs and school monitoring procedures.
  • A knowledge base of current research and literature in Deaf education and the instruction of student with multiple disabilities is preferred.

 
Qualifications:

  • Certified Bachelor's degree from an accredited university in Deaf Education with Council of the Education of the Deaf
  • Eligible for certification in Delaware as a Teacher of Students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing
  • Experience working with children who are at the elementary level
  • Background in oral education/Listening & Spoken Language preferred
  • Sign language skills with native or native-like fluency in ASL
