Role Overview
The Junior Process Engineer will support the design, development and delivery of brewing and distilling process systems for industrial projects in Durban. The role focuses on process engineering activities across the project lifecycle, including process design, calculations, documentation, multidisciplinary coordination and on site commissioning, while ensuring compliance with safety, quality and performance standards.
Job Description
- Review project deliverables to define and confirm process requirements.
- Develop process flow diagrams (PFDs), piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs) and equipment layouts.
- Confirm project design requirements with clients and relevant stakeholders.
- Design and manage brewing and distilling processes to achieve required product characteristics while maximizing safety and process performance.
- Ensure all processes comply with applicable safety and quality standards.
- Perform process simulations and troubleshoot operational or design issues.
- Create piping, insulation, instrumentation and equipment specifications appropriate to the project.
- Prepare tender and request for quotation (RFQ) documentation as required.
- Create, verify and validate all material take offs (MTOs).
- Liaise with equipment, instrumentation and installation suppliers regarding specifications, design and delivery.
- Prepare and complete detailed project plans.
- Propose design improvements, implement approved changes and perform quality assurance activities.
- Monitor and report project progress to all relevant stakeholders.
- Perform risk assessments including FMEA, HAZOP, hazardous area classification (HAC) and LOPA.
- Develop functional design specifications (FDS) and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Support on site commissioning activities including mechanical completion verification, punch listing, cold and hot commissioning, performance acceptance testing and final handover.
Qualifications
- Professional proficiency in English.
- A minimum of two years’ experience in process engineering or project management within the brewing, distilling or food manufacturing industry.
- A minimum Bachelor’s or Honors degree in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering or Industrial Chemistry.
- Ability to generate PFDs and P&IDs and perform process calculations including mass and energy balances.
- Modelling capability for plant layout, piping and mechanical design and detailing.
- Experience working in multidisciplinary teams including civil, mechanical, electrical, control and automation and production disciplines.
- Strong ability to work collaboratively within a team environment.
- Advanced time management, analytical and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in the use of 2D and 3D CAD systems.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Project is considered an advantage.
- Willingness and availability to travel for business, including relocation if required.
