Role Summary:
The Managing Director, Public Markets Modernization & Transformation is accountable for leading the successful delivery of CPP Investments' Public Markets Modernization program while establishing the foundation for the next generation of scalable public markets investment capabilities. Reporting to the Senior Managing Director, Global Head of Total Fund Management, the role provides strategic leadership across business, operational, data, technology, and governance workstreams to deliver a modernized public markets ecosystem.The Managing Director will lead the execution of a complex multi-year transformation agenda while developing a long-term platform strategy that positions CPP Investments to support continued growth in assets under management, investment complexity, trading volumes, and operational scale. The role requires a unique combination of investment management expertise, platform modernization experience, business transformation leadership, and technology fluency to ensure modernization efforts deliver both near-term business outcomes and long-term strategic value.
The successful candidate will serve as a critical bridge between Investment Teams, Investment Engineering & Analytics, Operations, and Technology, translating business priorities into scalable platform capabilities and ensuring strategic objectives are realized through disciplined execution and delivery.
Accountabilities & Qualifications:
Provide executive leadership for the Public Markets Modernization program, establishing the vision, operating model, governance framework, delivery roadmap, and success measures.
Lead a complex portfolio of interdependent transformation initiatives including trading ecosystem and improvement initiatives, data foundation enhancements, and related transformation priorities.
Serve as the senior accountable executive for program delivery, ensuring alignment across Total Fund Management, Trading, Investment Operations, Investment Engineering & Analytics, Technology, and other key stakeholders.
Establish and oversee program governance, including steering committees, executive reporting, risk management, issue escalation, decision-making forums, and regulatory/control oversight.
Develop and execute a long-term Public Markets platform strategy that extends beyond program delivery and supports CPP Investments' future growth, scalability, and investment objectives.
Partner closely with investment teams, Investment Engineering & Analytics, Operations, and Technology to translate business strategy and investment requirements into scalable platform capabilities, operating models, and delivery roadmaps.
Drive business readiness and operating model transformation, ensuring that people, processes, controls, and organizational capabilities evolve in parallel with technology delivery.
Manage critical cross-functional dependencies, sequencing decisions, resource planning, and prioritization to ensure successful delivery against strategic milestones.
Partner with senior leaders to identify, assess, and mitigate execution, operational, technology, data, and change management risks.
Lead executive communications and stakeholder engagement, providing regular updates to senior management and governance bodies on progress, risks, outcomes, and funding requirements.
Champion operational resiliency, control effectiveness, and business continuity throughout implementation and transition activities.
Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement across all PMM workstreams.
Ensure realization of expected business outcomes, including improved scalability, efficiency, data quality, operational effectiveness, risk management, and investment decision support capabilities.
Provide leadership, coaching, and development to multidisciplinary teams.
Develop and manage budgets, resource plans, and business cases associated with major strategic initiatives.
Qualifications:
Minimum 15 years of progressive leadership experience in large-scale transformation along with knowledge of investment management and public markets technology.
Proven track record leading complex enterprise transformation programs with significant technology, data, operating model, and organizational change components.
Demonstrated experience leading large-scale platform modernization initiatives and building scalable operating environments that support long-term organizational growth and increasing business complexity.
Deep understanding of public markets investment processes, trading, portfolio management, middle office, settlements, cash management, collateral management, portfolio accounting, investment operations, and supporting technology ecosystems.
Strong understanding of Public Markets Investment Engineering, investment analytics, data platforms, and the role technology plays in enabling investment decision-making and operational excellence.
Demonstrated ability to connect business strategy, investment processes, and operational requirements with technology delivery and platform design.
Proven ability to define and execute platform strategies that balance near-term delivery objectives with long-term scalability, resiliency, and evolvability.
Exceptional stakeholder management and influencing capabilities, with experience working directly with executive leadership teams and governance committees.
Strong strategic thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities with a demonstrated ability to manage ambiguity and complexity.
