About Lihir
Our Lihir Operation, located on the beautiful island of Niolam, approximately 800km north of Papua New Guinea's capital, Port Moresby, is one of the world’s largest gold mines. Set within a geothermically active, extinct volcanic crater, Lihir operates an open-pit mine producing refractory ore, which undergoes pressure oxidation and conventional leaching to recover gold. Our workforce includes both residential and commute rosters, creating a diverse and dynamic team. Lihir offers a range of recreational facilities, including a gym, sports club, restaurant, bar, swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, and a 9-hole golf course. Purpose
The Technician, lubrication will be responsible for maintaining the reliability and service life of industrial machinery through the correct selection, application, monitoring, and maintenance of lubricants and lubrication systems to minimize friction, wear, and equipment failure.
Essential Duties
- Perform scheduled lubrication tasks on fixed plant machinery including conveyors, gearboxes, pumps, crushers, mills, and motors.
- Inspect, top‐up, and replace oils and greases as per OEM and site lubrication standards.
- Maintain and troubleshoot auto-lube systems (single-line, multi-point, and centralized grease systems).
- Conduct oil sampling and basic oil condition assessments.
- Assist in contamination control, filter changes, and lubrication system maintenance.
- Identify and report lubrication-related defects through CMRs with clear severity ratings.
- Work closely with Condition Monitoring and Maintenance teams to ensure lubrication issues are addressed promptly.
- Maintain accurate lubrication records, route completion, and task history in SAP
- Ensure compliance with site safety, environmental, and work procedures
Training & Experience
- A minimum of 5 years’ experience in heavy industry.
- Trade Certificate in Mechanical Engineering: Maintenance, Fitting & Machining, or related trade.
- Lubrication Certification (MLA I/II or equivalent) advantageous.
- Basic Oil Analysis or Lubrication Fundamentals training (advantageous).
- NDT awareness is an advantage but not essential.
- Valid PNG Driver’s License (if applicable).
- Relevant safety certifications (e.g., Working at Heights, Confined Space) are an advantage. Strong understanding of lubrication fundamentals, contamination control, and best practices.
- Knowledge of industrial lubricants, grades, viscosity, and correct application.
- Ability to identify lubrication defects (leaks, contamination, overheating, inadequate lubrication).
- Experience with auto-lubrication systems and troubleshooting.
- Ability to read lubrication plans, PM task sheets, and follow maintenance schedules.
- Good communication skills and the ability to work independently.
- High attention to detail and strong housekeeping standards.
- Understanding of fixed plant equipment in mining or heavy industry.
Working Conditions
This is a FIFO role on a 21:21 roster.
