Job Description
Position Title: Fire Control Software Lead
Location: Opelika, AL
Travel Required: Yes
Position Summary
The Fire Control Software Lead will provide technical leadership, architecture definition, and software engineering oversight for U.S. DoW weapon system fire control software with an emphasis on complex ground combat and artillery systems. The role includes managing software requirements, leading design and integration activities, supporting digital engineering efforts, and ensuring coordinated execution across embedded software, sensors, ballistics, targeting, and system‑of‑systems interfaces. Experience with U.S. DoW weapon systems fire control software is required, and prior work on U.S. artillery systems is strongly preferred.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Lead the development, analysis, and management of software‑level and system‑level fire control requirements, interfaces, and specifications.
• Define and oversee fire control software architecture, including ballistic computation modules, sensor fusion, targeting algorithms, and command‑and‑control interfaces.
• Direct Model‑Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) and digital engineering activities related to software behavior modeling, system simulations, and software‑in‑the‑loop/hardware‑in‑the‑loop integration.
• Coordinate with systems engineering, vetronics, mechanical, electrical, and test engineering teams to ensure full fire control subsystem integration and technical consistency.
• Prepare and review engineering artifacts, technical documentation, design review materials, and program deliverables.
• Support verification and validation planning, including ballistic solution verification, timing analysis, targeting accuracy assessments, and software integration test events.
• Lead or participate in technical interchange meetings with government customers, subcontractors, and industry partners.
• Identify technical risks associated with fire control software development and integration, and support mitigation planning.
• Travel to customer sites, partner facilities, test ranges, and integration events as required.
Required Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Systems Engineering, or related technical discipline.
• Direct professional experience developing or integrating DoW weapon system fire control software (required).
• Familiarity with DoD acquisition processes, technical standards, and software development regulations.
• Proficiency in embedded software development environments, real‑time operating systems, and common development toolchains.
• Experience working with digital engineering or MBSE tools and workflows.
• Strong analytical skills and ability to communicate complex software and system behaviors in clear technical terms.
• Ability to travel as required.
Preferred Qualifications
• Active DoW security clearance or ability to obtain one.
• Experience with U.S. artillery fire control systems (e.g., howitzer, cannon, or launcher fire control algorithms, ballistics, or sensor integration).
• Experience with ground combat vehicle mission systems, vetronics, or integrated weapon subsystems.
• Background in digital thread/digital twin environments or model‑based software development.
• Experience supporting major defense acquisition programs or large‑scale software integrations.
