
Special Education Teacher (Co-Taught Classes, Science Experience Preferred)
Job Description
Under the general supervision of the School Principal, the Special Education Co-Taught Science Teacher supports and maximizes the learning experience of students with disabilities in inclusive/co-taught science classrooms. This role focuses on improving academic achievement, scientific literacy, interpersonal skills, and activities of daily living by implementing district-approved curriculum, including science standards; monitoring progress; addressing individual student needs; and providing a safe, engaging, and supportive learning environment.
Essential Functions
- Conducts assessments, testing, and diagnostic evaluations to identify learning needs and determine appropriate instructional strategies, particularly within science content areas.
- Collaborates with general education science teachers to co-plan, co-teach, and co-assess standards-based science instruction aligned with district and state frameworks.
- Participates in PPTs and assists in the development and implementation of Individualized Education Plans (IEPs).
- Implements accommodations, modifications, and behavior support plans within the co-taught science classroom to ensure student access to rigorous curriculum.
- Differentiates science instruction using a variety of instructional strategies, including hands-on learning, inquiry-based activities, and assistive technologies.
- Monitors, documents, and reports student progress toward IEP goals and science learning targets.
- Coordinates with administrators, related service providers, and teaching staff to address student needs and ensure consistency of services.
- Serves as a resource for students, families, and staff regarding special education supports and strategies, particularly within inclusive science instruction.
- Communicates regularly with parents/guardians regarding student performance, progress, and needs.
- Maintains accurate and complete student records in compliance with district procedures and applicable laws.
- Supports the development of students' scientific reasoning, problem-solving skills, and engagement in STEM learning.
- Participates in professional development to remain current in special education practices, co-teaching models, and science instruction.
- Selects and utilizes appropriate instructional materials, including science lab equipment, adaptive tools, and digital resources.

Travel Requirements
- Travels between school buildings and to professional development or meetings as required.
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
- Knowledge of special education principles, instructional strategies, and compliance requirements.
- Knowledge of science curriculum, NGSS (or state science standards), and effective science teaching practices.
- Ability to implement co-teaching models (e.g., team teaching, station teaching, parallel teaching).
- Understanding of differentiated instruction to meet diverse learning needs.
- Ability to analyze student data and adjust instruction accordingly.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills with students, parents, and colleagues.
- Ability to integrate technology to support both special education and science instruction.
- Ability to build positive, supportive relationships and maintain a collaborative work environment.
