JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Supervisor of Medical/Surgical/Pediatrics is responsible for the management of patient care, personnel activities, and staff development in conjunction with the Clinical Educator and other Supervisors/Managers under the direction of the Director of Medical/Surgical/Pediatrics. This position assists with the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care for Medical/Surgical/Pediatrics, patients and participates in nursing educational needs assessments and quality improvement activities.

The Supervisor, Medical/Surgical/Pediatrics assists with annual staff performance evaluations, investigating Safety Risk Management Reports, and with the development, revision, and implementation of new policies and procedures. This position facilitates patient care by informing staff, educating staff, and ensuring competence within staff members’ scope of practice by implementing best practices.  

This position requires leadership skills, including role modeling, coaching, and monitoring to develop the nursing staff. The incumbent should also have consultation skills to collaborate with nursing management, other departments, and professionals within the hospital as well as in the community.

The position requires advanced clinical practice skills. These include assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of a patient population whose age is determined by the educator’s specialty. The incumbent also assists with legal and regulatory standards to maintain quality care.

The incumbent must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care based on physical, motor/sensor, psychosocial, safety standards appropriate to the age of the patient served and meets standards of quality as measured by the department competency standards.

Evidence-based nursing practice, along with critical thinking skills, are required to provide optimally safe patient care when interacting with internal and external contacts, exercising judgment, and making decisions. The incumbent’s professional nursing practice is congruent with the American Nurses Association Code of Ethics.

EDUCATION

  • Graduate of accredited School of Nursing, required.
  • BSN required.
  • Master’s degree preferred.

EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum three years Medical/Surgical/Pediatric or commensurate unit experience required.
  • One year of Charge Nurse or supervisory experience required.

LICENSURE/CREDENTIALS

  • Current Washington State RN License required.
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) required within 30 days of hire.
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) preferred.
