Head Boys Tennis Coach
Job Description
Position Summary: The Head Tennis Coach is responsible for developing, organizing, and leading a competitive high school tennis program that emphasizes student-athlete growth, sportsmanship, discipline, and academic success.This position requires the ability to provide strong leadership for players, assistant coaches, and the program as a whole while maintaining compliance with school, district, league, and state athletic policies.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Plan, organize, and oversee all aspects of the tennis program, including varsity and junior varsity levels (if applicable).
- Develop structured practice plans focused on fundamentals, conditioning, match strategies, and mental preparation.
- Provide individualized instruction to players on stroke mechanics, footwork, and game tactics.
- Supervise athletes during practices, matches, travel, team events, and ensuring safety and discipline.
- Foster an environment that emphasizes character development, teamwork, sportsmanship, accountability, and respect for opponents, officials, and teammates.
- Communicate effectively with athletes, parents, staff, and administration.
- Collaborate with the Athletic Director regarding scheduling, transportation, budgeting, facility/court use, and program needs.
- Ensure compliance with district, league, state association (e.g. KSHSAA), and NFHS rules and regulations.
- Promote academic success by monitoring eligibility and supporting classroom achievement.
- Oversee care, inventory, and distribution of tennis equipment, uniforms, and supplies.
- Serve as a role model of professionalism, integrity, and high ethical standards on and off the court.
Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
- Knowledge of:
- Tennis rules, stroke mechanics, strategies, and match preparation.
- Proper training methods, conditioning, safety techniques, injury prevention, and emergency response procedures.
- Academic eligibility standards, district policies, and athletic regulations.
- Sports psychology and motivation strategies for high school athletes.
- Skills in:
- Strong leadership and motivational skills to inspire athletes and staff.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with athletes, parents, staff, and community members.
- Organizational skills for managing practices, matches, tournaments, and program operations.
- Analytical skills for assessing player performance and adjusting strategies.
- Ability to:
- Mentor, motivate, and develop athletes both on and off the court.
- Model discipline, professionalism, sportsmanship, and integrity.
- Balance competitiveness with sportsmanship and character development.
- Foster a positive and inclusive team culture.
- Engage positively with the community, alumni, and feeder programs to strengthen program support.
- Manage program logistics, including travel, scheduling, budgeting, and equipment needs.
Working Conditions:
- Work is performed on outdoor tennis courts, gyms, and athletic facilities.
- Evening, weekend, and holiday hours are required for practices, matches, tournaments, meetings, and events.
- Position involves exposure to varying weather conditions.
- Moderate physical activity, including demonstrating drills, standing for extended periods, and moving equipment.
Qualifications & Skills
- Bachelor's degree preferred; teaching certification may be required or strongly preferred.
- Prior successful tennis coaching and/or competitive playing experience preferred.
- CPR, First Aide, and AED certification (or ability to obtain)
- Must meet all district and state requirements for employment and coaching.
