About This Role
This position is a Technical Writer for the KGS Edwards brand of commercial fire products. The technical writers are under minimal supervision and work more independently within the Technical Publications department. Each writer is assigned to specific product platforms. As projects are determined within their platforms, the writer works with their project team, consisting of Engineering, Regulatory Compliance, Product Management, Technical Support, and Applications Engineering, to plan the publication deliverables that are affected. The writer is expected to manage their project plans, deliverables, and schedules. Each platform has a secondary writer assigned as the peer reviewer. All writers are involved in the decisions for style usage and department procedures.
Key Responsibilities
Assumes responsibility for managing the project schedule and reporting the project status for information products in which they are also the original author.
Creates information products including but not limited to: application, installation, programming, operation, troubleshooting, and service topics and manuals, installation sheets, online help systems, internet-ready information products and systems
Follows written department procedures to revise existing material and create new material for technical manuals, help systems, installation sheets, etc.
Researches, writes, illustrates, edits, and proofreads documents and helps systems within the schedules provided the project teams
Uses engineering specifications, marketing, and other source material, physical products in our test labs, as well as interviews with subject matter experts and other internal sources to obtain needed information
Basic Qualifications
Associate’s degree
5+ years of experience in technical writing
OR
Bachelor’s Degree
2+ years of experience in technical writing
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor Degree in Technical Writing, Technical Communications, Engineering, English or Business
Intermediate knowledge of electronics and computer programming concepts
Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Word, CorelDraw, Adobe Acrobat, RoboHelp, or equivalent tools
Intermediate writing skills demonstrated by the correct use of grammar, syntax, and punctuation, and by the organization of paragraphs, chapters, etc.
Experience utilizing strong planning and organizational skills.
