Job Description
Are you passionate about working with data and ready to take on an exciting challenge? We're seeking a Data Engineer to join our ambitious and friendly in-house Data Team within Information Services at Mourant.
You'll have a varied and interesting workload working with a range of Information Services professionals. You'll contribute to designing, creating, and deploying enterprise-scale data analytics solutions, playing an important role in transforming our data into valuable insights that drive business decisions.
We value potential as much as experience. If you're excited about data engineering and have a strong foundation in some of the areas below, we want to hear from you - even if you don't tick every box.
About the role
You'll be involved in:
Building and maintaining data pipelines for efficient data extraction, transformation, and loading (ETL/ELT) processes
Developing data models and transformation processes (we primarily use WhereScape Red alongside Microsoft Fabric tools, including Synapse SQL Data Warehouse, Notebooks, and Data Pipelines - but experience with any modern data platform is valuable)
Supporting our Data Warehouse implementation, working to ensure data quality, integrity, and security
Collaborating with Data Analysts, Data Stewards, and other cross-functional teams to deliver comprehensive data solutions
Creating and maintaining clear data documentation, including data catalogues and architecture diagrams
Working to optimise data storage and retrieval processes for improved performance
Contributing to data governance efforts and learning to implement DataOps philosophy
Staying current with industry trends and emerging technologies in data engineering
About you
Core requirements:
SQL proficiency - you should be comfortable writing queries and have an understanding of database concepts
Experience with or strong interest in data warehousing concepts
Some programming experience (Python preferred, but R, Java, Scala, or similar languages are great too)
Understanding of ETL/ELT concepts (hands-on experience is ideal, but strong theoretical knowledge with enthusiasm to apply it works too)
Problem-solving mindset and analytical thinking
Good communication skills and genuine interest in collaborative teamwork
Eagerness to learn and grow in the data engineering space
It would be great if you have:
Experience with any cloud data platforms (Azure, AWS, GCP, Databricks, Snowflake, etc.)
Familiarity with data pipeline orchestration tools (Airflow, Azure Data Factory, or similar)
Knowledge of data governance principles
Experience with version control (Git)
Understanding of DataOps or DevOps practices
Experience in financial services or legal sectors
What matters most to us:
We're looking for someone who is curious, adaptable, and excited about data. Whether you're coming from a traditional data engineering background, transitioning from software engineering, stepping up from a data analyst role, or bringing a unique perspective from another technical field - if you have the fundamentals and the drive to learn, we want to talk to you.
Our team values collaboration and knowledge sharing. You'll have the opportunity to work with modern tools and technologies, with support to develop your skills further. We've had great success with team members who brought strong foundations and enthusiasm, even if they hadn't worked with our specific tech stack before.
A note on our tech stack:
While we use WhereScape Red with Microsoft Fabric and Azure technologies, we absolutely welcome candidates with experience in other platforms. Skills in AWS, GCP, Databricks, Snowflake, or open-source tools are all transferable. What's important is your understanding of core data engineering concepts and your ability to adapt and learn.
