Your mission

War Child is looking for an: 
Intern: NL Programme



1. Purpose of the assignment

The internship focuses on three main areas:
  • MEAL system development
     Support the development of a Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability and Learning (MEAL) system 
  • Data collection, reporting and analysis
     Assist with collecting, reporting and analysing quality-of-care and M&E data 
  • Implementation materials and coordination support
     Provide practical support to the NL programmes coordination team as required
 
2. Background War Child Netherlands (WCNL) is one of the fundraising members of the War Child Alliance. In addition to its fundraising activities, it offers MHPSS support to children and families with a refugee background. War Child has developed a set of evidence-based interventions. In the Netherlands, War Child implements the following MHPSS interventions:

EASE (Early Adolescent Skills for Emotions): War Child has, led by WHO, developed, piloted and researched EASE, with the aim to train communities and partner organisations to implement quality and timely mental support to youth. EASE is an early treatment intervention for groups of youth (10-15 years old) exposed to armed conflict, displacement, and other forms of adversity. The program is designed to help reduce stress and improve the wellbeing of youth who experience mental health problems. 

BeThere: War Child has developed a group intervention for caregivers of children exposed to armed conflict, displacement, and other forms of adversity. The program is designed to help caregivers reduce their own stress and find greater support, so that they feel better emotionally, and have more energy to be the kind of parents they wish to be. The intervention aims to increase knowledge and skills related to parenting, to lower the stress of raising children in difficult conditions.
 
The NL Programme team consists of a coordination team at the office - Lead of the NL Programmes, MHPSS Quality and MEAL coordinator, M&E officer and Support officer – and a team of 12 facilitators and a pool of 8 freelance trainers who work directly with location staff and the families at the shelters and reception centers. The intern will work with and support the coordination team at the office.
 
3. Scope of work
The intern will support the MHPSS Quality and MEAL coordinator with the establishment of a MEAL system, including a dashboard, for War Child’s NL Programme, by designing additional or improving existing tools and formats to measure quality, effect and change by our trainings and interventions. 
 
The intern will assist the M&E officer with collecting, reporting and analysing quality of care and M&E data from projects, ensuring data quality and supporting evidence-informed decision making.
 
The intern will support the MHPSS Quality and MEAL coordinator in developing and preparing implementation and M&E materials for the contextualisation and pilot projects of EASE and BeThere in an additional language.
The intern will provide practical and logistical support to all team members of the coordination team by preparing meetings, materials, accommodation or any other requests to to ensure smooth running of project and coordination activities.

What we offer

Work schedule Assignment for 6 months: August 1, 2026 – January 31, 2027
FTE: 3-4 days per week (TBD)

Please note that War Child interns need to be registered students at a Dutch educational institution. This is a hard requirement. Students must be enrolled for the duration of their internship. Please note that this internship does not suit students who are in their thesis writing semesters.

Deliverables by January 31,  2027
  • Additional or improved M&E forms and tools to measure quality and effect of War Child NL’s trainings and interventions (yet to be determined which ones)
  • Evaluation reports of completed EASE and BeThere cycles in the period of the internship
  • Materials and overview of the process to support contextualisation and pilot projects 
 Payment schedule
As per War Child Intern Policy, your fee will be €300 gross per month (based on 5 days).  and compensation of travel costs to and from the Amsterdam office (2 days a week)

Type of supervision Endry van den Berg, lead NL Programmes will supervise the intern together with Marijke Tibosch (stagebegeleider), by bi-weekly bila’s on planning, challenges and progress.
