
Assistant Director of Transportation
Job Description
Primary Purpose:
Assists the Director of Transportation with coordinating and overseeing the transportation department operations to ensure an efficient use of equipment, facilities, and personnel.
Qualifications:
Clear and valid Texas commercial driver's license with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S)endorsements
High school diploma or GED
First Aid / CPR Certificate
TEA School Bus Certification
CPI Certification
Preferred Qualifications:
Class A CDL with P&S Endorsement or willing to obtain
TEEX School Bus Driver Instructor Certification or willing to obtain
TASBT Master School Bus Technician certification or willing to obtain
Routing software certification or willing to obtain
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Must be 21 years of age
Knowledge of applicable district policies and procedures
Knowledge in student management technique, including special needs students
Ability to operate, maintain, and drive commercial motor vehicles, including school bus
Ability to pass U.S. Department of Transportation alcohol and drug tests and annual physical exam, related to the requirements of the position
Ability to complete TEA required bus driver safety certification Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
Ability to manage personnel matters
Ability to communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing
Ability to use computer software effectively
Ability to respond after hours when needed
Experience:
One (1) � three (3) years experience in student transportation, preferably with public school districts. Prior supervisory experience preferred.
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
- Assists the Director of Transportation in managing the daily operations and personnel of the transportation department including overseeing fleet maintenance, training, student management, routing, regulatory compliance and supervising staff.
- Develops and presents material for various meetings to include transportation staff meetings, district staff meetings and Board of Trustee meetings.
- Investigates accidents/incidents and conduct or recommend follow-up training as needed.
- Responds to student management issues on buses as needed.
- Reviews and analyzes reports and routes to determine efficiencies in routing; including expansions and/or consolidation of routes and providing updated descriptions of bus routes and riders to drivers and campuses as needed.
- Maintains a roster of students for reporting purposes and eligibility requirements.
- Assist with managing the upkeep, repair schedules, and replacement plans for vehicles, ensuring equipment is properly insured and maintained.
- Periodically drives bus route (or assists) to determine status and condition of route; serves as a substitute bus driver or bus monitor as needed.
- Evaluates, coaches, mentors, and counsels staff as needed.
- Ensures staff is following established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties.
- Corrects & reports unsafe conditions in work area to Director.
- Works irregular hours and responds to after-hours calls as needed.
- Participates in inclement weather decision making process.
- Attends all required training as directed.
