Primary Objective:
The Laboratory Assistant will be responsible for supporting laboratory testing operations and assisting assigned laboratory sections as required to meet daily operational needs. The successful candidate will be expected to adhere to all applicable safety, quality, and regulatory requirements while maintaining acceptable productivity and supporting efficient laboratory workflow.
Position Duties and Scope:
The Laboratory Assistant has the following duties:
- Adhere to company policies, procedures, and directions regarding standards of workplace behavior in completing job duties and assignments.
- Follow safety requirements as described in the company Safety Manual and communicate all safety concerns and incidents to the Safety Representative.
- Observe established safety regulations and comply with all ALS health and safety policies and procedures.
- Follow Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) requirements without deviation, except were approved by Supervisor or Manager.
- Adhere to strict QA/QC requirements.
- Use correct methods in accordance with the established procedures and schedules while ensuring analytical quality.
- Create work lists, workgroups, sample tables and other tasks as assigned.
- Properly completing all paperwork used to track tests and their validity
- Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
- Storing and disposing of samples properly.
- Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned from time to time, as required
- Other duties as assigned.
Position Requirements/
Essential Criteria:
- High School diploma or laboratory experience preferred.
- Working knowledge of good laboratory practice.
- Comfortable in high paced production environment.
Core Competencies:
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Proficient computer skills, specifically Microsoft Office.
- Must be able to assist co-workers whenever necessary to meet deadlines.
- Must be able to effectively perform duties under pressures arising from large sample volumes and short turn-around times.
- Must be able to work independently and with supervision.
- Ability to use (or learn to use) Laboratory Information Management System.
- Adheres to safety policies and practices.
Occupational Health & Safety Responsibilities:
- Follow all company operating procedures, standards, policies, and training to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the site.
- Play an active role in the ALS safety program by correcting or reporting unsafe acts and conditions that are observed during the day-to-day operations to create a zero-injury work environment.
- Participate in and support HSE initiatives, as required by ALS leadership.
- Understand and use HSE precautions (such as but not limited to fume hoods and PPE) while working with chemicals and samples of unknown hazards.
- Ensure the health and safety of staff, contractors, and/or visitors by providing appropriate leadership, due diligence, resources, training, and enforcement for all individuals onsite.
- Monitor and enforce the health, safety and environment policies, procedures and ensure compliance with the relevant regulations.
- Actively promote awareness of these policies, procedures, and regulations amongst company personnel.
- Actively support and participate in all OHS initiatives. Lead by example.
- Report all personal injuries and incidents and assist with investigations as per company policy.

Other Requirements:
- Ability to lift up to 30 lbs./14 kg on a regular basis and carry for short distances.
- Ability to sit or stand for a full shift.
- Manual dexterity to perform intricate and/or repetitive tasks.
- Wear issued personal protective equipment (PPE) such as dust masks, goggles, gloves etc., when required.
- Able to speak and hear clearly while communicating with co-workers and managers.
- Must have average vision and able to see to read reports and operate equipment.
- Hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone.
